Get Your Primary Priorities Right
"But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42 NKJV
Imagine living your whole life with a set of priorities only to discover at the end that you focused on the wrong things all through. I know this isn't something good to visualise, but it's just tragic. And I must say that this is the reality of many today.
We often choose priorities based on what culture and tradition teach us. We choose priorities based on what demands we have on our plate. Unfortunately, our values often take the back bench when we try to figure out what to do now.
As much as it was important to serve the guests in her home, which was a commendable thing for Martha to do, given the rarity of the opportunity at hand, gaining knowledge and being closer to Christ was more important.
Although the scripture above emphasizes on the importance of spiritual nourishment over the physical, it's also possible to say that Martha could have joined Mary to at least listen to the teaching for some time before getting up to ensure everyone was well fed.

In every season, it's important to define what balance means and what our main priorities should be. Not every area of life will receive equal attention in terms of the amount of time spent, but being flexible will help us thrive.
Some constants rarely change. For example, building my relationship with God. What can change will be the time spent and sacrifices made. For a period, I may have all the time in the world for spiritual retreats and lengthy study times. At other times, I'll have to be more intentional about those activities.
