How to build—and rebuild—trust with Anne Morriss and Frances Frei

Trust is like oxygen. When it’s there, we hardly notice—it keeps everything running smoothly. But when it fades, everything gets harder. Relationships fracture. Teams stumble. Communities struggle.

Right now, in our society today, trust is in short supply. One of the tools I find most useful as I endeavor to understand this is The Edelman Trust Barometer, which reveals a troubling decline in public trust over the past two decades. Skepticism has replaced confidence. Cynicism has replaced goodwill. But we don’t have to accept this as the norm.

This week on Hello Monday, I talk with two experts who believe trust can be fixed: Anne Morriss and Frances Frei.

Anne is the co-founder of The Leadership Consortium, which helps organizations build stronger, more resilient cultures. Frances is a Harvard Business School professor and one of the world’s leading authorities on trust and leadership. Together, they’re the dynamic duo behind the TED podcast Fixable.

In this episode, they share:

  • The “Trust Triangle,” a framework based on empathy, authenticity, and logic.
  • How to find your “wobble” and strengthen your “anchor.”
  • Practical steps to rebuild trust in broken relationships and teams.
  • The biggest mistakes organizations make when trust erodes—and how to avoid them.

Whether you’re a leader striving to inspire confidence, a colleague working to repair a relationship, or someone navigating a complex world, this episode offers actionable insights for building trust that lasts. Listen now, right here:

This was a very thought-provoking episode. Amplifying your ambition is perfect advice for setting new year's goals. The insight that our fear is not of change, but of things worsening, is insightful.

“Trust is like oxygen - when you have it, you don’t even notice it.” Ahhh, SO good. I’m surprised outside of authenticity, logic, and empathy that consistency isn’t the other lever. Isn’t trust something you earn over a period of time, or period of consistent demonstration? I think that would better speak to the question asked of, “can you have multiple wobbles?” I would think yes, which is caused by a lack of consistency to keep those “plates spinning”.
