A Hotel Manager Job is Tough

Training to become a Hotel Manager is among the most difficult of all training programs, requiring long hours, high stress levels, and the acquisition of an ever-expanding number of technical skills in a relatively short period.
Given the high demands in Hotel Manager training, Hoteliers should spend a lot of time and effort to choose the best applicants to admit to their programs. However, despite their best attempts to successfully filter out those applicants that do not have the skills for success in a difficult training program, not all Successful Applicants are truly “great.”
Truly Successful Applicants will probably share certain qualities and skills: these qualities are the same for Great Applicants in any area of Hospitality and not limited to General Hotel Management. So what attributes are critical to being a “Great” Hotelier?
Trustworthiness
Being trustworthy is perhaps the single most important quality in a junior Hotel Manager and an absolute prerequisite for a Hotel Manager’s Application. A “Great” Hotel Manager is able to perform most of their duties independently, but importantly, knows to discuss complicated issues with their Senior Hotel Managers.
Efficiency
To be a Great Hotelier one must be a hard-working individual. However, being hard-working alone is insufficient to being a Great Hotel Manager. Importantly, you also must make time to spend with family, get exercise, and participate in a “normal” life. Time management is important as well as Efficiency.

Self-directed learners
Hotel Management is challenging because the range of knowledge that is required is broad – you must master the business environment in addition to the economy, as well as become knowledgeable about Hospitality and its subspecialties. This learning occurs through a variety of means and it requires self-motivation.
Detail-oriented
Another skill that is critical among high-performing Hoteliers is absolute and exacting attention to detail. This is so important given the complexity of modern Hospitality within Hotels. There are hundreds of tasks that must be carried out daily by a Hotel Manager and each task that goes uncompleted could compromise Guest care.
Personable
There is a common saying that to be successful in Hotels, one has to be “available, affable, and able.” This is also true for being a Hotel Manager. Hotel Managers need to be personable to effectively work in a multidisciplinary team environment collaborating with Hotel Supervisors as well as with their fellow Hotel Managers and other stakeholders to provide Hotel Guest care.
