Get Up and Out of Your Funk

Hey you, yes you! I see you feeling emotionally worn out and confused about the tough circumstances currently in your life or the certain direction you feel your path is headed. Although I am one of the biggest advocates for resting and taking full care of your body (both physically and mentally), sometimes getting up and out of bed after a long episode of despair and worrisome thinking can be just what you need. Staying consumed in a dangerous bubble of anxiety or pit of sorrow can only get you so far. What you’re going through may be incredibly tough, and I do not intend to discount that one bit. What I am saying is that there are certain times where you need to force yourself to get out of bed and distract yourself from the intrusive thoughts and feelings that are causing you so much hurt. This is not easy at ALL. It may feel like one of the hardest things you’ve ever had to do, especially if the mental state your in is increasingly overwhelming and worsening. If you can’t do it alone, have someone physically pull you out of bed for the day to help motivate you to get into a different headspace.?
If you feel you’re unable to get out of bed still physically, but your mind wants to get moving, do something productive. Watch an inspirational or comforting documentary, read a self-help book, journal, do a breathwork meditation. Just staring at your ceiling won’t move the needle closer to where you want to eventually be. Say you made the conscious decision to physically get out of bed. You just took the biggest step right there. It may seem silly, but in your head say to yourself, “I already did one simple thing I didn’t think I’d be able to do. I’m already going in a better direction than before.”?
Ironically, our cortisol levels are the highest in the morning, probably due to the anticipation of what the day before us holds and all the immediate thoughts of what could go wrong. The devil tries to get us in the morning when we are most vulnerable and have the ability to set the overall trajectory of our day. What you desire and accomplishing your biggest dreams does not lie in the comfort of areas you’ve already been. If you push yourself to get out of bed on a bad day and it didn’t get much better, that’s okay too! We have to have grace and patience with ourselves to remember that simple steps are what start any long and fruitful journey. Get out of bed, and don’t forget to make it!
