Get Up Offa That Thing ~
Time to push the clocks forward, letting spring know to hurry up and get here already.
If you ask why we move the clocks ahead in the spring most people will give that ancient folklore answer where the farmers needed more time in the day to farm and that is why we have Daylight Savings Time. Actually it was Germany in 1918 that first moved the clocks forward in the spring to conserve energy during the last year of the Great War.
America at that time moved the clocks forward for the very same reason, but after the Great War, it was left to each state in the U.S. to spring ahead and/or fall back with the time change, which drove the trains and trolley schedules crazy for 20+ years.
Daylight savings time was mandatory again during WWII, but after the war ended the states each went back to running on their own time. The Uniform Time Act of 1966 established the official start and end dates, and that helped move Daylight savings time towards everyone getting their clocks in sync across the U.S., yet each state was left to decide if they followed the time change or not. Only time would tell.
It wasn’t until 2005 that daylight savings time as we know it today was signed into law as part of the U.S. Energy Policy Act. Today more than 70 countries observe daylight savings time. Now the next time someone asks you what you know about daylight savings time, you will be wise in the ways of time-keeping science.
Remember - no matter how you set your clocks in life - time marches on.
So ~ Get Up Offa That Thing and get moving! :)
