"Get Unstuck is to the mind what exercise is to the body..."?
"Dedicated to what is possible" - Author

"Get Unstuck is to the mind what exercise is to the body..."

I liked the very first sentence in the book. "This book is dedicated to what's possible."

Get unstuck is an unusual book in many ways. First it does not look like a book. It is like some folder with lots of stuff filed in it.

The very first section is about how to use the book. Immediate message to me. "Don't just read it. Use it."

First question: What is my challenge? Next question: Why is this important?

What thoughts and ideas do the 'flips' give me?

There three kinds of 'flips':

Inspiring stories

Provocative quotes

Powerful models

Here is ingenuity in design. The book does not look like a regular book.

It is a kind of a spiral binder which has worksheets plus the 'flips'

Here is a sample of the three kinds of 'flips'

Inspiring Stories (50 stories)

"When Steve Jobs rejoined Apple in 1997 as CEO, one of his first actions shocked the (many) Apple die-hards. He created a strategic alliance with the 'enemy' Bill Gates and Microsoft. He even got Gates to to invest $150 into the company."

Question: "What is the counter-intuitive action you would take in your current situation? What would happen if you embrace your opponent?"

Provocative Quotes (50 quotes)

"A life lived in fear is a half lived life." - Baz Luhrman, Director

What are you afraid of ? If you were fearless, what would you do (differently)?

Powerful Models (50 models)

WISDOM = What I Should Do On Monday?

What should you do today? What should do right now?

Why do I love this book?

"You have to love this book for the format alone, let alone the wisdom in it. And how what is profound does not have to be obscure." - Peter Block, Author of "Flawless Consulting" and "The Answer to How is Yes"

I have used "Get Unstuck & Get Going" several times in the past. What it really does is to help me open my mind to new possibilities. Things that have not occurred to me. Things that I knew but did not look at. My go-to-book when I feel stuck and want to get going!

However... you need patience and a relaxed mind to make this work.

It worked for me every time when I :

  1. kept at least of couple of hours
  2. didn't allow anything else to disturb me (mobile was on silent mode, face down)
  3. wrote down all the thoughts triggered by a story, a quote or the WISDOM

I am currently using this create something on a new project. My first round yielded some good ideas. I am going to try some today & tomorrow.

Maybe I should capture my learnings in the form of a case study. That could be useful.
