Get Through The ATS By Changing This On Your Resume

Get Through The ATS By Changing This On Your Resume

Is your job search going slower than you want because your resume is blocked by Applicant Tracking Systems (the resume pre-screening software employers use)?

If so, you're not alone. Getting through the ATS is the #1 problem of my webinar attendees, listed by an average 2/3 of the audience as their top job search issue.

What can you change on your resume to get through employer and recruiter ATS more often?

  • Exact Words And Phrases:?ATSs can only recognize?exact words and phrases, verbatim - This makes you lose many opportunities when you're qualified, simply because you didn't anticipate the words an HR rep/Recruiter chose for search criteria (usually different than what's in the job description). Google can regognize synonyms and common phrases, but ATSs can't. Applicant Tracking Systems simply don't have the AI level software programming that the world's biggest and most sophisticated search engine does - not even close.
  • Heavy Resume Customization:?Chances are, you're not customizing your resume enough to have a fighting chance to get through ATSs. Spending more time customizing your resume is one of the best investments of your time in order to get more interviews. Even if you spend 20 minutes on your resume (the average time job seekers spend customizing) it's not anywhere near enough to get you through the ATS very often. Even though this means you'll send fewer resumes, by investing significantly more time customizing each resume, you'll get through the ATS more often and land more interviews.
  • Terminology:?Think about how you choose keywords on your resume, to anticipate employer search criteria - There's a good chance you're using the terminology of your past employers, industry terminology, or terminology from online lists. This might match a few criteria, but not enough to get your resume through the ATS. Didn't your past employers use different words/phrases from other employers to describe operations, reports, processes, products and many other things? What makes you think that your target employer uses the same words/phrases as your past employers?

To have your resume seen, you have to be almost perfect in matching criteria, because employer processes search for 7-10 criteria and only count exact words/phrases as criteria matches.

Good thing there are ways you can increase the odds that you'll be chosen for an interview, and get a high-quality interview with a high chance of being hired. You'll have to learn how to do more than just get through the ATS. to get what you want.
