The Learning and Development (L&D) field is rapidly growing as organizations increasingly recognize its importance. L&D plays a crucial role in talent development, helping employees improve their skills and enhance their performance. What's exciting about L&D is that many of the skills required are transferable from other fields—it's how you apply them that matters.
Here’s an easy way to get started in L&D:
- Research the L&D Function - Begin by researching what L&D is all about. Learn the different components such as instructional design, facilitation, coaching, eLearning, and performance consulting. Understanding the bigger picture will help you decide where your interests lie.
- Identify Key Roles in L&D and Their Responsibilities - Create a comprehensive list of L&D roles, such as instructional designer, learning consultant, facilitator, or training coordinator. While job titles may vary, many roles share similar responsibilities. Understanding the L&D value chain helps you see how these roles contribute to the overall function.
- List the Skills Needed for L&D Roles - For each role you’ve identified, make a list of the skills required. These might include research, technology administration, communication, facilitation, Storytelling, copy writing, graphics design, project management etc.. Knowing these skills allows you to focus on the most relevant areas.
- Assess Your Current Skills - Be honest with yourself as you list your current skills. Many skills you’ve gained from other industries, such as communication, problem-solving, and project management, are applicable to L&D. Align these with the L&D skills you’ve listed in Step 3.
- Find the Best Role Match and Start Developing - Based on your self-assessment, identify which L&D role aligns best with your existing skills. Start developing yourself in that direction by reading more, engaging in discussions, and even volunteering if you can. Creating a portfolio based on real responsibilities for that role will demonstrate your capabilities to potential employers.
- Update Your CV and Start Applying - Revise your CV to showcase the skills and experiences that align with the L&D role you're targeting. Focus on what you've learned, projects you've completed, and any portfolio work you’ve done. Once ready, start applying for L&D positions or internships to gain practical experience.
- Seek a Mentor or Coach - Having guidance is invaluable in this field. A mentor or coach can help you navigate your journey, provide industry insights, and keep you accountable. Depending on your preferences, you can seek out a mentor with L&D experience or a coach to help you stay focused on your career path.
- Network and Engage with the L&D Community - Actively engage with the L&D community by joining webinars, participating in LinkedIn groups, or attending professional events. Networking will help you stay up to date on trends, gain insights from experienced professionals, and even uncover job opportunities.
Following these eight steps will give you a clear roadmap to enter the L&D field. It’s all about taking the skills you already have and tailoring them to the specific needs of L&D. With focused effort and the right guidance, you’ll be well on your way to a rewarding career in Learning and Development.
