Coding as a Digital Marketer

It’s inherent that marketers have a level of basic coding knowledge so that they’re able to work and communicate more effectively with internal tech teams and developers. Coding also gives marketers creative opportunities to DIY aspects of a website without waiting for the assistance of a web developer - which can end up saving your team valuable time in the long-run.

My Experience Using Codecademy

Codecademy is a great resource for those looking to acquire some basic coding knowledge. They offer an incredibly helpful and interactive training experience that gives you information about coding HTML and how to interpret it. You learn the basics and the varying levels of nesting when coding a web page. It also teaches about the use of HTML attributes, how to insert images and video, as well as a variety of textual styles that can be implemented within your writing. The coding segment of the course was also relatively quick and solutions were readily available if you got stuck! Here is a portion of the webpage you'll end up with upon taking the course.

Squarespace is a site that allows users to create their own websites through the utilization of premade templates. There is also an option to place written HTML code within a web page. I don’t have any prior experience with web design on Squarespace, however it did appear to be more coding friendly as well as easier to navigate than WordPress. One downside to Squarespace is that there are barriers to total customization and the amount of features you can add, so that's something to keep in mind when creating your website. I got to play around with their coding feature, included is a screenshot of what I ended up with up with!

?WordPress is a great tool for designing a website if you’re new to writing HTML! This tool is functionally similar to Squarespace in the sense that they both offer pre-made customizable web templates and block styles with the option for added coding. WordPress is great because there are ton of options for customization, and templates are not as limited as they are on Squarespace. When I created my own WordPress website, I used all premade block tools because I did not have any prior coding knowledge. Here are some screenshots from my website!

Codeacademy, Squarespace, and WordPress . . . Use All Three!

Codecademy gives you the ability to learn to code by following their simple and easy to navigate course structure. Once you have some basic coding knowledge, you can apply what you’ve learned by creating and designing websites either with WordPress or Squarespace. Both services offer pre-made templates for ease of use but there is also an option to code your own HTML which gives marketers opportunities for further personalization of a web page - but don't worry, in depth coding knowledge is not necessary to build a website on either platform! All 3 services can be utilized by a digital marketer depending on their coding knowledge and preferences.
