GET SOUGHT-AFTER FOR 'OPRAH-LEVEL' OPPORTUNITIES

Deborrah Ashley, the Authority Positioning Strategist, here to share my Oprah encounter story! 

I'm writing a story for O’ The OPRAH Magazine and I'd like to interview you.

That's what the voice on the other end said to me when I answered the phone while shopping in the mall one Friday afternoon, on an emergency shopping job for a client.

Sorry, WHAT DID YOU SAY?…

I replied as my heart started beating quickly and my brain SCRAMBLED to recognize the voice on the other end, in an attempt to figure out who was playing this NOT SO FUNNY joke on me.

IT WAS ANNOYING...

I WAS WORKING!

I was walking in Lenox Mall, in Atlanta, GA that day when I received that phone call and the mall was pretty noisy.

The "CALLER" repeated her name, so I could write it down, and told me she was writing a story for the holiday edition and FOUND ME after hearing about my unique business concept.

I proceeded to NERVOUSLY answer her questions.

After the interview and up until the 3 months that followed, I didn't quite believe that was really a story for O' The Oprah magazine. I was surprised when in November when I received the magazine and saw the article.


“December 6: Consider a personal shopper. It sounds like a luxury....

Deborrah Ashley, an Atlanta-based personal shopper, says she can save you time and money. "I get a better pick of inventory, whether it's an outfit or a toy that's going to be really hot this season," she says. "Plus, when people book me early, I can monitor sales."

She'll work with any budget and tackle the day-after-Thanksgiving sales so you don't have to.

Although, I'd love to get another call from the people at Oprah (and I will), because I've worked hard to prepare myself for that NEXT level, my purpose and my calling requires MORE!

After the story ran, I was inundated with so many calls for help and so much business that the volume overwhelmed me and I COULDN'T do it all.

SELFISHLY, I self sabotaged. 

THE LESSON

That was my first big WIN and FAILURE as a business owner and easily cost me hundreds of thousands of dollars in lost business and opportunities.

That experience alone taught me so much of about having your back end systems set up like a well-oiled machine. Most importantly, it taught me how to ready myself and get sought-after for OPRAH level opportunities.

Luckily, a few months later, I made up for it when my local news station heard about me and decided to make it a story. They sent a camera crew and reporter to meet me at the mall while I shopped for a client.

This time I was ready for the calls and the volume.

Although, I'd love to get another call from the people at Oprah (and I will), because I've worked hard to prepare myself for that NEXT level, my purpose and my calling requires MORE!

Now my vision is to empower those who have the potential to be game changers, typically the best kept secret in their industry, successfully get SOUGHT OUT for similar opportunities.The key is getting them involved in the right conversations, so their ideas are heard and implemented, instead of ignored or marked as low priority.

So I ask you this?

When is it your turn to get the call that makes your heart BEAT so fast with excitement, that you can barely catch your breathe.

Great story and points. I’d been in business for three months when I landed as the cover story in the AJC business section. But I was ready because I’m very keen on process!
