My Father-in-law

It’s Thanksgiving again. You sit down with your family and give thanks for all that you have. You have a secret. You are thinking of moving to Texas to start your own business. Should you mention it? If you do, will Grandpa tell you that you are nomadic and that you need to settle down and find a good job? My highly intelligent, amazing father-in-law did just that.?

My father-in-law spent his working life in a large pharmaceutical company and rose through the corporate ranks. He is one of extremely few people I know who retired at the age of 55 with a pension. So when my husband and I told him we were moving to Texas with our then 5-year old son to start a new business, he thought we were nuts!

That was 20 years ago. It is interesting now, that my father-in-law couldn’t imagine our lives any different way. He sees the life that having our businesses has allowed us to build and the time we have had for our sons. He now thinks it is odd when we sometimes find ourselves without time flexibility. He is fully supportive of our decisions.?

What We Knew That He Didn’t

At the time we made our move, I was investing in a franchise. I spent a lot of time looking introspectively at our goals and my skills. My husband and I had a budget to get the business started, money to live through the start-up and to make the move. Then I followed all the steps in the due diligence process provided to me by the franchisor, got my facts together, and researched the market. We put everything in place to make it as safe as possible for us to make our leap of faith. And all that preparation narrowed that leap.?
