The simplest answer is that the biggest opportunities are actually missed when people try to avoid being rejected. The method is based on the idea that as your chances of rejection and hearing "no" increase, so will your chances of receiving "yes" or other favorable outcomes.
The phrase "Would you like fries with that?" is well known to all. The phrase "upsell" alone captures the entire philosophy behind a question that is so widely used. Of course, it's accurate to say that offering more products and services will raise both the yes and no's you receive. It is one of the great unbreakable laws of the universe in addition to being a foolproof formula.
The majority of people were raised in a "Go for Yes" culture. The yes is beneficial for closing, while the no is harmful in that world. If you receive a "no," you must be unsuccessful and acting wrongly. We are unfortunately prevented from asking more questions, discussing other products and services, or going after that large, daunting client we've always wanted to land by this emotional baggage and faulty belief system.
In the modern world, it is necessary to experience failure and rejection in order to succeed significantly. Success and failure must be understood for what they really are: two sides of the same coin rather than opposites. In other words, the destination is yes, but the means of getting there is no.
