Some cybersecurity experts have long worried about what a hacker might be able to do with AI in video — create a convincing version of, say, a corporate executive who really wants to know your password. AI software is now capable of doing this practically in real time, meaning a hacker could pretend to be your boss on a Zoom call.
Udi Mokady, chairman of the information security company CyberArk Software, discovered recently how powerful these types of attacks could be. In a Microsoft Teams video message, Mokady found himself staring at a deepfake of himself.
"I was shocked," Mokady says. "There I was, crouched over in a hoodie with my office in the background." The stunt was created by one of Mokady's own employees. Gal Zror, a vulnerability research manager at CyberArk, used free generative AI tools to re-create Mokady's image.
Zror's initial goal was to see what was possible, and that quickly morphed into a warning for his bosses.
