Howdy there! We've got a major update headed our way when it comes to OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (HCS). If handling hazardous chemicals is part of your operations, you'll want to pay close attention to these revisions.
On July 19, 2024, OSHA's new final rule updating the HCS will go into effect across the country. This rule aims to enhance the effectiveness of the current standard by better aligning it with the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS) Revision 7 from 2017.
So, what are some of the key changes we can expect? Here are some highlights:
Revised Hazard Classification Criteria
The criteria for classifying certain health and physical hazards are being updated to provide a more comprehensive capture of chemical hazards. This should improve hazard communication to downstream users.
New Labeling Requirements
There will be new mandatory labeling provisions for small containers as well as revised rules about updating labels when chemicals are released for shipment. More clear and consistent labeling equals better hazard awareness.
Safety Data Sheet Content Updates
The required contents of Safety Data Sheets (SDSs) are getting some technical tweaks related to things like concentration ranges and trade secrets. The goal is making SDSs as useful as possible.

Trade Secret Provisions
Speaking of trade secrets, the new rule establishes specific provisions for when concentrations or concentration ranges can be claimed as trade secrets. Balancing confidentiality with hazard disclosure.
With an effective date of July 19, 2024, companies need to start preparing now to update their hazard communication programs, training, and align with the new requirements. This is a big overhaul aimed at improving workplace safety when it comes to hazardous chemical exposure.
As always, I'm here to help answer any questions as we gear up for compliance with the revised HCS. The full final rule is available online, but hit me up if you need a real human to break it down. Let's make sure we're all ready when this goes into effect on July 19, 2024!
