Lately I have been coming across many people who are not happy with what they are being paid. Mainly women but men also. And yes there is still an average 17% pay gap between men and women in Australia.
Typically the client sounds like this…They had applied for a new job at another organisation. The role looked appealing. The person that interviewed them seemed reasonable. They were on similar money to what they had. They were not happy where they were so they ‘jumped’. Breathing out or even saying a few expletives under their breath as they made the move.
After a while they had found out what their colleague or another person with a similar job elsewhere was being paid more. Not a few hundred dollars but often in the thousands. Now they are mad. ‘The organisation should have offered me more’ they say. Or the alternative is learn to better negotiate your salary.
3 things for your future:
1. Do a benchmark: What is on offer and compare against other roles advertised or check with a recruitment company you may know or ask what the pay scale is and where you sit in your questions at the interview
2. Have some courage: Ask if all the deliverables in your role were met, what is the typical pay rise after 1 and 2 years. It only takes 10 seconds and could shift what you are paid.
3. Know you are helping: By asking you are going to achieve your personal goals quicker, take your family on a holiday, increase your self worth and help close the pay gap. Link into your why.
Love Always
