Stoic Quote of the Week
It does good also to take walks out of doors, that our spirits may be raised and refreshed by the open air and fresh breeze. -Seneca
What I learned this week:
I love being outside. There is something about the breeze, the open sky, and the inviting environment to me. The problem is that we have become tied to the indoors. Our offices, conference rooms, and desks all hold us down inside where we are limited in what we feel or experience. If you work from home, you might be in the basement or, as in one of my previous positions, a classified room with no windows and not even a glimpse of the world outside. That is tiring. I get exhausted just thinking about those days and how draining it was, and when I did go outside, usually to go home, how good it felt. But I felt this anchor or ball and chain that kept me tied to my position. Even today, my office has amazing windows so that I can see the trees in my yard and the sky, but that same ball and chain can capture me if I'm not aware and paying attention. About four years ago, I had neck surgery, and the one thing the doctor told me I could do during recovery was walk, so I did. Now I look at each day as an opportunity to take a quick walk. My route is a 6-7 min round trip depending on how fast I am moving, with a plan to do that three times a day. When I first started, it was tough, and when I didn't hit 3, I would ask myself how could I not have found 6 min in the day at least three times? Here are two immediate benefits of taking that time each day. First your health; we are creatures designed to move and be outside. Look at it this way, the better you feel physically, the more work you can do mentally. The second reason is to take a break from what you are doing. When you do, your subconscious will continue to work to solve the problems or items you are working on. If that doesn't convince you to buy into this idea, here's the bonus value, you are outside! Get up, get out, and get moving. Everyone has the time if they want to use it.
Planning thought of the week:
Allocation of time is one of the toughest things to do when planning. We tend not to allocate enough time to perform or complete a task. The best thing to do is to prioritize your tasks when they are assigned and time is allocated across the team. If you overestimate the time needed, that creates white space. The team needs to know what to do with the white space: wait to be told what to do next; help another team member; move to the next effort; or take a nap, ??.

Business idea I heard about or thought of:
I might have mentioned this business before, but it is so unique I have to share it again, wine from lemons. A good friend of mine came up with this idea several years ago and took the leap into the blue ocean to start his company, Evergood Adventure Wines. This week, what brought this back to me was chatting with the chief revenue officer about other ideas in the adult beverage industry. As we talked, I realized that the wines they have are so different that they are still in a blue ocean (read, Blue Ocean Strategy). This doesn't happen very often. When you have an idea in an industry that no one else has, you create a market to own. If you haven't tried one of their wines, they are now in cans and are shipping all over the USA! Check them out, Evergood Adventure Wines

Someone I met this week:
I met Janet through one of the private organizations we both belong to, and it took us over a month to finally get our schedules to align so we could talk, partly because she lives in Indonesia. Janet is an amazing businesswoman who has excelled at a range of things, from real estate investing to running multi-million-dollar corporations to hosting destination weddings. She has now shifted gears and is focused on a life problem area for women, estranged mothers. She has taken all her years of business operations experience and poured it into how to help women solve this problem. What I found unique about the program is that it isn't therapy; it isn't coaching; it is a process in which she trains her clients on how to become whole again. I am excited for her and how many women she will be able to help. If you or someone you know is dealing with this issue, please feel free to send me an email to request an introduction, and I'll connect you with Janet.
