Get Off The Bench And Into The Game!

Get Off The Bench And Into The Game!

I read an article over the weekend that stated that only twenty percent of qualified accountants that migrated to Australia find work in accounting and allied fields. An absolute waste of valuable resources!

Some Australian accountants say they don't recognise overseas experience as the Australian taxation system is unique and vastly different from other countries.

I have not found this to be the case. Systems constantly change from budget to budget and accountants need to consistently stay on top of these changes to remain relevant. It is the same everywhere, not just Australia!

If the article I read is correct, then there is an absolute plethora of talent warming the bench! What I see every day backs this up. These candidates aren't getting access to the opportunities to positions that they could fulfill blindfolded!

Why should you give someone a chance?

Skill Shortages: Australia has a shortage of accountants and tapping into the skills of migrants alleviates this shortage more rapidly. Recognising and utilising overseas experience enables firms to fill crucial roles and meet business demands more effectively.

Diversity: Life would be very boring if everyone was the same! Migrants bring diverse perspectives and experiences from their home countries which enriches the work environment and leads to innovative approaches. Embracing diversity encourages thinking outside the box which is vital for staying competitive and something that some argue that the accounting profession is lacking in!

Global Experience: Migrants experienced working in different economic and cultural contexts provide insights into international markets and practices which is invaluable for Australian firms operating in an interconnected world enabling them to navigate business landscapes more adeptly.

Cultural Competence: Employing migrants with diverse cultural backgrounds enhances cultural competence within organisations. This fosters better communication and understanding with clients and stakeholders from various cultural backgrounds, ultimately strengthening client relationships and expanding business opportunities.

Adaptability and Resilience: Migrants have demonstrated adaptability and resilience by navigating the challenges of relocating to a new country. These qualities are invaluable in business where the ability to adapt and respond to change quickly is essential for success.

Economic Growth: Harnessing the skills of migrants contributes to economic growth by maximising the productive capacity of the workforce. This stimulates innovation, drives business expansion and creates employment opportunities for both migrants and locals ultimately benefiting the broader economy.

By embracing the valuable contributions of migrants Australian firms can position themselves for success in an increasingly competitive and dynamic business landscape. It is something Australia has prided itself upon for a long time!
