Need to get noticed in LinkedIn Search?
I wrote this guide for my friends because they were wondering how I managed to get visible in so many searches at LinkedIn. I figured I should just share it on LinkedIn as well.
Enjoy my battle tested "Best Practices" of appearing in searches at LinkedIn. I have found this by trial and error + pen and paper (talk about a digital marketing expert huh..) If you have questions, leave a comment or PM me.
This article will be split into two sections:
- How to build your profile around searches.
- How recruiters find your profile.
PS: Always remember this - Focus on quality content first. Make sure your profile text, work description, and education description are easy to read, have the right information and explain what you can do. When this is done, that's when you can start including keywords that are search friendly.
Headline - Your personal sales pitch
Always start with a professional, but headline. Your headline is your one-liner sales pitch. Think of it as your advertisement text that pulls people to your profile page.
The better you can refine this text, better results you will get. If you are paid member on LinkedIn. You will be able to see how many searched you appeared in last week. Use this to test out different headlines each week.
Summary - First Part of Search Visibility
Write about yourself and your experience(s). Make it short, easy to read and relatable. However, use personal skills and/or professional skills in your text.
Advanced tips: Say you want to appear in searches for something you would like to work with, but don't want it to be visible for your coworkers that you are looking. Let's say you want to do International Business in China.
Write one-liner about your interest in "International Business in China". So when a recruiter includes "business" and "China" in the search. Your profile will trigger and show up in his or her search.
Same applies with the keywords you put into your summary. Just remember, always make sure its quality content and then focus on keywords.
Work Experience - Keywords, keywords, and more keywords.
Write 2-4 sentences about your role at the company. Keep it short, but sweet. Recruiters/HR just wants the key points. After you have written this part, you summarize rest of your skills that you used to do your role at the company.
If I have written that I am "Search Engine Marketing Account Operator at Omega Media." My summary could look like this then:
Search Engine Marketing: Account Optimization, Analysis, Budgeting, Estimating, Account Strategy, Planning, Advertisement and so forth.
By doing this, I am adding words that LinkedIn search will pick up, and I am also most likely repeating some keywords from the summary section as well.
Education - Keywords spree continues...
Same process as work experience. In my profile, I highlighted Marketing Manager, Chinese, China, International Business, Public Relations, Communication.
You want to highlight skills that job searches use in their search. And you are consistently building keywords (job skills) that they are using in your interested field of work.
Featured Skills & Endorsements
You list every professional skill you have used. Feel free to get some inspiration from job adverts on LinkedIn for skills you possess, but haven't included.
Here are some examples of skills that can be used: "Project Management", "Leadership", "Social Media Marketing", "Marketing Management", "Advertising", "Luxury Management", "Account Management", "Fashion Marketing", "Online Advertisement", and so forth.
If you have done this right, your featured skills should be in your work/education/summary text as well. You don't need to have every skill in summary, but if you can repeat some skills it would be perfect. LinkedIn Search Robot will see your profile as someone with competency in that skill.
How do Recruiters/HR/Hiring Manager find you?
When a recruiter searches for a candidate, they will fill in a list of skills that the candidate should possess (keywords). Let us say they are looking for an online advertiser, they will most likely look for something along these lines:
"AdWords", "Search Engine Marketing", "Social Media Marketing", "Management", " Microsoft Office", "Marketing Strategy", "Market Research", "Project Management"
If your Featured Skills and profile have included these skills, you will be visible in the search. While your rank will be based on how many of these skills you cover in your profile. This results in you being shown in more searches, which again means the chances for them contacting you is also going up.
Ending Note - You just learned Online Marketing basics.
I can't promise you that you will instantly land a job with this method, but I can guarantee that you will have much higher search volume where your profile will be included. Which in return will raise your chance of getting an
And by doing this, you actually have actually gained a solid basic understanding of how online marketing works. Neat, right?
- You have engaging content about yourself and what you can provide.
- You are using the right keywords (skills) that will make you visible when someone is looking to solve a business challenge (solution: hiring you).
- Your headline is like an Ad in Google Search. You grab the searchers attention and makes them click on your name. Then it sends them to your LinkedIn Profile.
- Your LinkedIn Profile is your landing page, where your goal is to make the searcher do an action. That can be a job interview, networking or something else.
Ending End Note - I promise...
