It's an age since I last wrote an article so thanks for reading this one.
Let's get straight to it. There's a culture and belief in the UK which is completely incorrect. That culture surrounds hiring someone, as a perm or contractor, who also owns and operates a business which is scaling. Let's crack straight on with the myth busting and explain why these people (like me) are brilliant hires.
- They're used to sweating assets. How do we know this? If you're scaling a business, margin and ROI is key. As most UK businesses are self funded, the people who run them are used to sweating assets e.g. fully utilising anything which the business already has. An asset could be a relationship, supply contract, social media channel, an old disused laptop, a discount or free access to a medical help line. You name it, these people will look at something and sweat it to get the best use out of it before even CONSIDERING spending 20 pence on something new. If that's not a brilliant reason to hire someone, I'll eat my hat.
- They're used to giving the most important things their undivided attention. Yep, like a tightrope walker, they'll quickly identify your most important deliverables (like not falling off) and stick with them until they are DONE. Again, this relates back to the most important principles of scaling. Do what needs to be done, in the shortest possible amount of time, to the highest level of quality possible. Sounds simple right? It's actually hard to do that in the real.
- They'll have brilliant structural and communication skills. Seriously. In the scaling world, there's no room for misunderstandings or lack of structure. Scaling relies on EVERYONE knowing what they are doing, when and why. Scalers have a natural ability to define scope, orchestration and to ensure everyone understands the 'WHY'.
So there you go, 3 solid reasons to bust the myth.
I have always been a solid advocate of fewer (but better) people. Scalers are better. They'll run your deliverables with all the skills needed (and more) to scale their own. Guaranteed.
