An historic former church in a coastal village setting near Chichester is coming up for auction later this month. (wed, July 28)
Church of the Assumption of St Mary the Virgin is among 110 lots in the latest auction being held by one of the top five property auctioneers in the UK, Clive Emson Land and Property Auctioneers.
The Church Farm Lane, East Wittering property is being offered with a £175,000 to £200,000 freehold guide price at the firm’s auction which ends on Wednesday, July 28.
Senior Auction Appraiser & Auctioneer Richard Payne said: “This grade II listed former Anglican church, which dates back to the 12th century, was recently used as a museum and has undergone extensive maintenance, including a new roof.
“It is situated in a highly desirable coastal location, just off the A2179, on the edge of the village of East Wittering, which was included in the Domesday Book.
"Although not used for worship for some years, St Mary’s is an attractive historic building retaining many original features, including the main door, tiled floor and windows.
“We consider this medieval property, with Victorian restorations, to be suitable for a variety of uses, subject to all necessary consents being obtainable.”
The approximate gross internal floor area extends to just over 103 sq m (1,110 sq ft).

Longer House in the High Street is also being offered at the auction - with a freehold guide price of £550,000-plus and vacant possession.
Auction Appraiser Chris Milne said: “This is a fantastic opportunity to purchase such an attractive period property situated in a prominent position on Rye High Street.
“Longer House was for many years occupied by Barclays Bank and is positioned among various independent and national retailers, pubs and restaurants, and is close to the railway station. There is a large garden to the rear of the building.
“It is considered the property may offer potential for residential conversion, subject to all the necessary consents being obtainable.”
The building has an 18th century front which was largely rebuilt when taken by Barclays Bank in 1930. Behind the facade, the house runs back into a gable of the early 17th century or earlier and contains ceiling beams dating from a timber framed building.
The ground floor has a large open plan office space, with a first floor of three rooms, a second floor of four rooms and basements which contained the safes. The site extends to 0.03 hectares (0.08 acres).
