Get lucky - the old fashioned way

Get lucky - the old fashioned way

This quote, attributed to Roman philosopher Seneca (4BC to 65AD), reminds us that we make our own luck. The difference between ‘lucky’ and ‘unlucky’ people is influenced by our actions and choices.

For example, if you retreated to your home and never ventured out, your likelihood of meeting a romantic partner or establishing a new business relationship would be nearly zero. Actions you take to stretch yourself, to put yourself in situations where you expose yourself to new ideas, new relationships and new opportunities increases your likelihood of being ‘lucky’.

Similarly, hard work, perseverance and focus will increase your likelihood of advancing your business, getting ‘lucky’ in your career or having a successful product to take to market.

And your parents were right too – practice, practice, practice. Become an expert at what you do and your ‘luck’ will improve.

The truth is, you will always be faced with both lucky and unlucky situations. You have to be prepared to recognize and respond to both. If you were swimming in a river with lucky events flowing (as they flow in your life), you would occasionally be hit by some (both lucky and unlucky). You have to be ready for both.

The key message is that you have to get in the river in the first place!!

Put yourself out there. Work hard. Focus. You will reach the level of success you desire, but only if you get out on the field and play!
