Get to Know Our Staff: Bastian - Event Officer

The first time I had insight into EcoNusa was when I decided to do volunteering for an environmental organization in 2018. Knowing that EcoNusa works for the protection of tropical rainforests and communities in eastern Indonesia, the born and raised in Papua me was eager to join the organization. After graduating from college, I was assigned to support Pandu Laut Nusantara community.?

In August 2020, I was allocated as a consultant for the Communications team to assist the public events held by? EcoNusa. Soon afterward, I had the opportunity to be a staff member to ensure the administration and reports flow according to the organization’s SOP. From the beginning of 2022 until now, Event Officer is my main job to assist public activities at EcoNusa.

In mid-2021, I had such a precious experience when I? got the opportunity to represent EcoNusa and also youth from Indonesia to attend the Leadership Summit organized by Heirs To Our Oceans (H2OO) in Hawaii, USA. The 2-week event was attended by 22 other youths from various countries. I learned to cultivate empathetic leadership through direct interaction with local communities regarding the socio-cultural and environmental issues they face. We engaged in a lot of discussions related to climate crisis issues through meetings and discussion forums with experts and environmental activists.

Joining EcoNusa provides me a space for learning about environmental issues, especially what happened in eastern Indonesia, where I was born and raised. In addition, I also have the opportunity to grow and improve my capacity and network along with my career.
