Lee Velvick is an accomplished ILS Manager, who has played an instrumental role in a recent Medallion award winning project. We took the opportunity to sit and down and ask him all things ILS and how came to work in the industry. Read on to find out more about Lee!

What is your current project role within Informatech?

I am responsible for ensuring that all associated ICT hardware is requested, approved, and delivered to the correct location, when and where it is required. This is executed by: Monitoring and managing demand management and supplying support activities for the deployment of new hardware. I also monitor and provide oversight of decommissioning and disposal activities of existing hardware in the DSE. This can entail providing guidance around policies and procedures to ensure compliance and reporting requirements from Partners.?

How did you come to work in ILS?

I had an interest in understanding why the Defence Force purchased a particular item over another, and what other possible options were available that could have potentially fulfilled this requirement that would end up in the hands of the warfighter.?

This has led me to work on various projects in both acquisition and sustainment within the Australian Navy and Army.?

What do you find is the most challenging part of your role?

Cooperation with Defence partners via positive engagement is key. Understanding that process and compliance must be adhered to, and ensuring security and asset management are maintained throughout the transition from old to new ICT systems.

What do you wish people understood in relation to ILS within a project environment?

Understanding that a well-executed ILS strategy will greatly benefit a project if the requirements for each of the ILS components are adequately planned, resourced, and implemented at the commencement of a project rather than mid-way through or not at all.

What has been the most rewarding part of your role?

Knowing that I have contributed to improving the DSE in Defence by upgrading the operating system to Windows 10, with the outcome that this has improved the war fighter's experience when accessing applications.
