Get to know Ben Sutton-Lowe
This is Ben Sutton-Lowe, Tui Ora's ICT Support Analyst, he's the man with a plan when it comes to technology.
Fresh out of Massey University with a Bachelor of Information Science, majoring in Information Systems, naturally his next step was to find a job in IT, however he actually found himself in environmental planting, looking out for Mother Earth before landing an interview (and second interview) with Tui Ora.
"I'm really enjoying it", Ben grins "Still meeting new people, can put a lot of names to faces now but still learning how to fix new things every day, no two days are the same!
While we all have our own ways of working and doing things, Ben admits he is quite pedantic when it comes to IT.
"I like doing things quite specifically, just like your typical IT person I guess!"
So what does a day-in-life of an IT Support Analyst look like??
"I'll come into work in the morning, sit down, flick on my computer and check the service request desk for any tickets, then see if I have any emails or Teams messages. I get quite a lot of these throughout the day so I'll approach people as needed."
Ben agrees that as an organisation with a diverse makeup of kaimahi, there's quite a wide range of tech skills and capabilities among staff, and he'll work with the whole spectrum in a typical day.?
"Some people are super easy, they can just tell me what the problem is and I can give them direction to fix it themselves. Other people aren't as proficient so may need a bit of teaching or learning, I can go through it with them, show it to them again just so they know."
We all know how frustrating computer problems can be, and Ben acknowledges that often people are more interested in just getting the problem solved than trying to remember the specifics on how to get there,?
"Sometimes I'll fix it and people will just be like "Cool, thanks, talk later!" I like the variance though, talking to people is great, asking how their week is going. The best outcome is when I fix a problem for them and I don't have to come back to it!"
?It's can be quite hard to think of a fun fact about your job, but Ben says,
"Sometimes the problem is the same, but not always the solution. I'm definitely a fan of the classic turning-it-off-and-on-again, it solves about half of all problems!"
Outside of work, Ben is quite the gamer, he enjoys playing PC and laser tag, and just hanging out with his friends.??
