Get the Job!!! - Part 3: Maximizing Your Visibility and Attractiveness to Recruiters
Now that your CV and LinkedIn profile are aligned, and you have clearly defined your goals, limitations, and answers to key interview questions, it's time to take the next step: maximizing your visibility and attractiveness to recruiters.
In this article, I'll share practical strategies to help you stand out in the job market and increase your chances of being noticed by companies and recruiters.
1. Tailor Your CV
The first step is to tailor your CV for each application. Highlight the experiences and skills most relevant to the job in question, using keywords from the job posting.
2. Networking: Build and Strengthen Professional Relationships
Networking is one of the most powerful tools for discovering new opportunities and getting noticed by recruiters. Connect with colleagues, managers, clients, and other professionals in your field. The larger your network, the more visible you’ll be to recruiters, who often share opportunities on their pages.
3. Leverage Internal Referrals
Ask a colleague to share your CV within their company. Most companies have referral programs where both the employee and the referred candidate benefit, and the recruiter has more confidence in someone who is recommended. Applying through an internal referral can significantly increase your chances.
4. Apply Selectively
Only apply for positions that match your profile. Sending applications for roles where you don’t meet the requirements can damage your professional image. Being selective in your applications demonstrates professionalism and increases your chances of success.

5. Be Proactive in Your Search
Waiting passively for a response is not enough. Reach out directly to recruiters and hiring managers with a polite and well-crafted message on LinkedIn. A courteous follow-up after an interview or application shows your interest and dedication, keeping you on the recruiter’s radar.
Don’t be afraid to apply for positions you believe you can achieve, even if the odds seem slim. I recall my first position as IT Director at águas do Minho e Lima. The job ad was in a newspaper, and even my father doubted I could get the role—but I did.
6. Prepare Well When Contacted
If a recruiter contacts you, take the opportunity to update your CV and LinkedIn profile, and prepare your mindset for the interview. Remember, in the interview, the recruiter may not remember whether you came through an application or if they contacted you directly. When approached, we often have a less positive or less eager attitude, which can be detrimental. Treat every opportunity as unique and prepare with maximum effort.
Conclusion
The most important thing is to stay on the recruiters' radar. Even if you’ve already applied for the same position and weren’t accepted, don’t hesitate to apply again. The world changes every day, and I know of cases where candidates were rejected for positions with lower responsibilities but were accepted months later for more senior roles. Persistence, combined with a well-defined strategy, can be the key to landing your next big opportunity.
