Get healthy during the possible lock down
2 weeks at home in lock down can seem like a dream for most people – Netflix, not allowed to go to the gym, alcohol and lots of food (unless it runs out). However, why not turn this lock down into a positive thing? (unless you are told to rest due to getting the virus) We sometimes struggle to fit in training, learning to cook tasty and healthy meals etc. The lock down would give us all of the time to create amazing habits for our health before our return to work 2 weeks later.
My online coaching business is not only working with employees in the UK to improve overall health, but we are now preparing people for the possible 2 week 'lock down’and how they can use it as an opportunity to create good long term habits in a number of areas:
Exercise/Activity – You do not need a gym to get fit or keep in shape. You also do not need lots of gym equipment either. Your body weight and a small area of space for you to move in is all you need. I have worked with many clients who travel a lot with work and cannot always rely on the hotel gym being good enough. Therefore I create exercise plans as if there is no gym at all.
Nutrition – Learning to prepare and cook healthy meals. So many people wish they had more time to learn how to cook healthy meals. This 2 week lock down can give you that opportunity. If you could learn to master a handful a healthy recipes in this time, then you can hit the ground running on your return to work. Also, if time is not on your side when you are working, recipes that are quick (but still healthy) are key to you being able to sustain the healthy eating beyond the 2 week lock down.
Habit Coaching – Habit Coaching is where you can make a huge difference to your life. The key to this 2 week lock down is to build a schedule which will be reinforced before you go back to work.
- Try to perfect getting better sleep – most people will go to bed really late if they have 2 weeks off. However this will make it even harder to go back to work after 2 weeks. If you are working from home, I would still look to go to bed and get up at a sensible time.
- Learn how to relax if this is something you struggle with. People’s lives are so much more busy and frantic than ever before, and so many people do not know how to relax. Find ways to help you relax now you have the time – reading a book etc.
- Hydration – Around 80% of the world’s population is dehydrated. With 2 weeks at home, you would have no excuse not to drink the right amount of water that your body needs.
If you implement all of the above in the 2 week lock down, think how much healthier you would be. Not only would your immune system be firing on all cylinders, but you would have improved energy and performance at work and you would start to see the physical improvements too – lower body fat levels and increased muscle.
Therefore, see the possible 2 week lock down as an opportunity rather than a time to go in the other direction. In fact, the lock down would give you no excuse to not do any of the above. You will have the time to do everything listed. As an extra motivation, why not take a body picture of how you look before the 2 week lock down, implement all of the above and then take an after picture at the end of the 2 weeks? If you have stuck to everything, you should notice the differences, visually and in how you feel.
