Get hands-on to build culture, trust and community
Health care is a burgeoning field in the US. It’s also infinitely complex. When you’re part of a large organization, it can be easy to feel lost in the mix. So it’s crucial for CEOs to foster purpose and connection.
That’s why I spend a couple of hours each Monday with new employees on their first day working with us. During the Northwell Health "New Beginnings" welcome program, every new staff member (we hire almost 200 per week) finds out what the health system is about and how they are important to our continued success.
Everyone’s invited to write a question -- any question -- for me on an index card. Over the years, the queries have included anything and everything, from the future of health care to my favorite restaurant. I answer all of them. Then we discuss Northwell’s history and I explain the connectivity of our organization and the interdependence of every department, site and person.
I want every staff member to understand our organization’s totality and mission. We are stronger when everyone appreciates how every part of Northwell is connected and their personal role in our success.
My latest Becker’s column further explores executives' responsibility to employees of health care organizations. Please take a look.

5 年Michael Dowling your post is inspired, compelling and feels so authentic. I am a patient (and huge fan) of my several Northwell physicians and team members. But last year "Dr K" nearly ruined your brand...being polite, he's a used car salesman, plussed up my visit with an alarmist, uncaring, not listening to me, my wife with an unneeded, costly procedure-he is loathed on "healthgrades.com." He helped make his numbers, his month off me. Happy to sign an NDA, fill you in off line or meet with you in your office, over coffee, or any of your team- compliance, etc.? I sent a note about him, the experience and it went nowhere- happy to send to you. Northwell Health deserves better...i am blessed to have T1 diabetes and have Dr Liao; to have had an LAD event/CABG and to now have Dr Lasic and even Dr Acquista my "everyday" physician is ridiculously amazing!? Mike, my whole career i have helped brands (publicly traded companies, start-ups, 501c3s) tell their story by being their best and most authentic selves--your post inspired me to write this. LAST THING: We have been slow walking the payment like $100 a month but it feels dirty, like extortion given the circumstance. I can't imagine you want this kind outcome... where a real discussion and understanding "authentic resolution" is so doable. Thanks! 917.282.0718/[email protected]??

5 年Michael Dowling Thanks for building a culture of safety for your employees. It is very important aspect of workplace that many healthcare organizations don’t spend enough time. Culture of safety at workplace, in the end, affects patient safety in healthcare. #cultureofsafety #patientsafety #leadership

5 年Spending time with employees on all levels is the best way to know what is right and special about our establishment. It is also the best way to know what not working for us. What lifts the spirits of the employees, what makes us feel ineffectual or easily dismissed. Perhaps several different days/evenings for the different areas, as our needs and concerns vary
