I recently had the pleasure of speaking at the California State University, Fresno Career Champions Luncheon alongside our outstanding Director of the Career Development Center, Mary Willis . I shared some thoughts on preparing for a meaningful career after college.
Seeing the hard work of faculty and staff members who mentor and help students succeed was inspiring. During my talk, I introduced two acronyms that can be helpful reminders for students as they navigate their education and career paths: GRIP and W.I.N. G.R.I.P. stands for Grit, Resilience, Integrity, and Persistence. These qualities are essential for success in any field, and I encouraged faculty and staff to encourage students to cultivate them through their coursework, extracurricular activities, and personal relationships.
W.I.N., on the other hand, stands for What's Important Now? This acronym is a simple but powerful reminder to focus on the present and maximize every opportunity. It is a term conceived during my time as a high school cross-country and track coach. Whether studying for an upcoming exam, networking with professionals in their field, or exploring new interests, students can use the W.I.N. mindset to stay motivated and engaged.
Overall, I hope my remarks at the Career Champions Luncheon provided valuable insights for students preparing for their futures. Remember to keep G.R.I.P and W.I.N. in mind, and always strive for excellence in everything you do! Here's to the start of a new semester filled with hope and opportunity.
