Get into Cyber & Tech Policy

Get into Cyber & Tech Policy

Happy Friday everyone! Everyone seems to be exhausted with what is turning out to be a long January and it is certainly not a quiet one. Of course for me, and my beloved subsea cables, it has been a significant week with NATO finally increasing its patrols in the Baltics. (I keep trying to finalise a blog just on this but the situation keeps evolving. I hope though to have it live by next week!) Meanwhile there has been no shortage of big tech policy news...

Trump & Circumstance

Well, it did not take the newly inaugurated President Trump to shake up the tech policy landscape. Flanked by the titans of the tech industry as he was sworn in he proceeded to postpone the law banning TikTok, giving those who felt the pain of the 12 hour blackout 75 days reprieve. Former President Joe Biden's executive order on AI safety was repealed whilst pushing for a new strategy on AI. And if he didn't do enough on Monday, Tuesday brought the announcement on the massive $500 billonn private AI investment project, Stargate, a joint venture aimed to accelerate the compute capacity in the US for AI development. The race for compute hegemony is well and truly on between states and tech companies alike.

Meanwhile, cyber was not left untouched with the termination of advisory boards reporting into the Department of Homeland Security impacting and particularly the Cyber Safety Review Board. This is particularly ironic as it is the CSRB that is investigating the Salt Typhoon breach, dubbed one of the most significant attacks in US history. With CISA reshaping, I draw this week's job hunt inspiration from the very brilliant former head of CISA, Jen Easterly. This article in WIRED is super-interesting but most of all it discusses her love of Rubk's cubes and some of the key skils for the cyber industry (note for all - she doesn't say just coding!)

Ern? Rubik, who invented the thing, said something like, if you are curious, you will find puzzles around you. And if you are determined, you will solve them. And when I think about the incredible technical talent that we have here at CISA, it’s the intellectual curiosity, it’s the hacker mindset, it’s the problem solver. But it's also the determination, the relentless drive to solve the most complicated problems out there.

So with that, I urge all of your curious minds to check out this week's job listings and there's even a really interesting NATO student challenge just opened up as well.

Till next time - happy hunting and keep smiling!

Melanie

PS. Thank you Thomas Graham for the help as ever - hope everyone likes the new format!
