Imbolc is the first festival of the calendar year to celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of spring. It is a Gaelic traditional festival that marks the beginning of spring. Its traditional date is the 1st February, which is approximately halfway between the winter solstice?and the spring equinox.
?
The winter solstice occurs when either of Earth's poles reaches its maximum tilt away from the Sun, and in the Northern Hemisphere, this marks the 24-hour period with the fewest daylight hours of the year. That is why it is known as the shortest day of the year.
?
The spring equinox marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. The Earth sits with its axis tilted neither toward nor away from the sun, which causes 12 hours of sunlight almost everywhere on Earth.
?
Back to Imbolc, which celebrations honour the pagan goddess Brigid, who is evoked in fertility blessings and oversaw poetry, crafts, and prophecy, using techniques of storytelling, music, and poetry writing and reading.
?
History:
?
The etymology of Imbolc is unclear. A common explanation is that it comes from the Old Irish, i mbolc, meaning ‘in the belly’, which refers to the pregnancy of ewes at this time of year.
?
There is a Proto-Celtic link to, embibolgon, that means, ‘budding’.
?
It may also reference, ‘to wash/cleanse oneself’, which relates to a ritual of cleansing similar to the ancient Roman festival Februa or Lupercalia, which took place at the same time of year.
?
Lastly, it has been associated with the Proto-Indo-European meanings of, ‘milk’ and ‘cleansing’.

BDSM Titbit:
?
Imbolc clearly centres its celebration around fertility. ?In BDSM there is a fetish known as Breeding.
?
Breeding in BDSM is an impregnation fetishism. This is the experience of intense sexual attraction at the thought of being impregnated or impregnating someone, which means that someone wants to ejaculate inside their partner or to be ejaculated into without any birth control. There is sexual excitement derived when posed with the risk of becoming or getting someone pregnant during intercourse.
?
This fetishism is rooted in the fantasy of getting pregnant, but not the desire of raising a baby. Since breeding fetishes are rooted in fantasy, it is not exclusive to people in heterosexual relationships. People in same-sex couples and transgender individuals may have breeding kinks too. For some, a breeding kink can include fantastical elements, like getting impregnated with alien eggs or celestial ejaculate.
?
Men may be turned on by the fantasy of accidentally getting someone pregnant or becoming pregnant themselves. There is also the act of cum dumping, which many men enjoy, where they deposit their semen and fill up a ‘repository’ (sexual partner).
?
Having a breeding fetish is not necessarily just human nature, as it is not the animal instinct to reproduce that is the turn on. Many that possess this kink do not wish to actually have a child, and others may not be physically able to have children, and yet, they become aroused by the concept of being impregnated or of impregnating.
?
Having a breeding fetish is not uncommon, and, as long as, it is between consenting adults, and that no unplanned children are produced, there is no harm in practicing this kink. ?

Finishing Off:

The energy that Imbolc brings is the passion and heat of the returning Sun. It is celebrating the new energy of inspiration and creative forces. As the festival promotes creativity, go put some music on and be inspired in the bedroom! Just always make sure to keep it safe, sane, and consensual, and above all, have fun all you glorious, beautiful kinksters.
