GET BETTER OFFERS WITH THE RIGHT NEGOTIATION SKILLS.

Why are they paying her 300k and they're paying me 150k?

Hey you! It's NEGOTIATION!

If you never followed your mum to a proper Nigerian market, then you must have missed out on how to negotiate the price of a particular product from 10k to 3k. And it's not in the "you will sell or you will not sell", it's in all the attributes of the goods and how she specially looked for the particular store cause the person is her customer and what have you.

You see all of those things are the reasons why you mum would most likely get a good deal cause she knows how to negotiate properly.

Negotiation skills are crucial for interviews too as they empower candidates to secure better compensation and job conditions, resolve conflicts professionally, and effectively communicate their qualifications and value to employers. Interview-specific negotiation skills can lead to improved career opportunities and financial outcomes.

If you never know how to bargain for the better salary and working conditions then you're in luck because I came with the full package .

Here's a guide on the right way to negotiate and what not to do:

THE RIGHT WAY TO NEGOTIATE

1. Research First: Before the interview, research the typical salary range for the position in your industry and location. Websites like Glassdoor, Payscale, and LinkedIn Salary Insights can provide valuable data.

2. Wait for the Right Time: Avoid bringing up salary or benefits too early in the interview. Wait until the employer is clearly interested in hiring you.

3. Express Enthusiasm: Show enthusiasm for the job and gratitude for the offer before you start negotiating. This sets a positive tone.

4. Be Prepared: Anticipate what you'll ask for, whether it's a higher salary, additional benefits, or flexible work arrangements. Be ready to explain why you're worth it.

5. Listen Actively: Pay attention to what the employer is offering and any additional benefits they provide. Sometimes, the initial offer is better than it seems.

6. Consider the Whole Package: Don't fixate solely on salary. Think about the overall compensation package, including benefits, bonuses, stock options, and professional development opportunities.

7. Negotiate Professionally: Be professional and respectful in your negotiations. Use "I" statements to express your needs rather than making demands.

8. Give a Range: Instead of stating a specific number, provide a salary range. This allows for flexibility and compromise.

9. Ask for Time: If you're unsure about an offer, ask for some time to consider it. This shows that you take the decision seriously.

10. Practice: Practice your negotiation skills with a friend or mentor. Role-playing can boost your confidence.

WHAT NOT TO DO

1. Don't Be Aggressive: Avoid an aggressive or confrontational approach. Negotiating is a conversation, not a confrontation.

2. Don't Bring Up Personal Expenses: Keep personal financial matters out of the conversation. Focus on your qualifications and the value you bring to the company.

3. Avoid False Threats: Don't threaten to walk away unless you're fully prepared to do so. Empty threats can damage your credibility.

4. Don't Share Personal Problems: Avoid sharing personal financial issues or other problems as reasons for needing more money. It's not relevant to the negotiation.

5. Don't Rush the Process: Take your time to consider the offer and negotiate thoughtfully. Rushing can lead to poor decisions.

6. Don't Make it Just About Money: While salary is important, don't make it the sole focus of your negotiation. Consider other aspects of the job that are valuable to you.

7. Don't Make Unrealistic Demands: Your requests should be based on industry standards and the company's budget. Unrealistic demands can derail negotiations.

8. Avoid Accepting the First Offer Too Quickly: It's generally a good practice to ask for some time to evaluate the offer, even if you're satisfied with it. This shows professionalism and gives you time to consider all aspects of the offer.

Negotiating during an interview is a skill that can be learned and refined. It's an opportunity to advocate for your own best interests while maintaining a positive and professional demeanor.

Now let's go get that offer!!
