The Beatles resonated so deeply with me as a kid that later I became their American music publisher as Worldwide EVP of ATV Music (acquired by Michael Jackson to become ATV Sony). The company designated me as John and Yoko’s liaison.
I vividly remember sitting with John Lennon in a deli in NYC not far from The Dakota, enjoying the conversation and enraptured by his incomparable charisma. Had I only known that there wouldn’t be a continuation. I also relished my dinners with Yoko and getting to know a person that the press never would.
The Beatles impact on culture is immeasurable and unequaled in music. Watching Peter Jackson’s “Get Back” is a visceral experience for me. It documents the creation of the centerpiece to the soundtrack of my adolescence, which became the inspiration and prime motivation for a lifelong ambition to communicate positivity and advocacy through music.?As Bob Lefsetz said in his review, in the sixties “Saying something was important, unless you were maybe on AM, well at least in the seventies, singing meaningless ditties, just like today…”. I agree. Most of today’s music is a forgettable, vapid repetition of a contemporary’s success which was equally dismissible. Generally, these aren’t songs as much as tracks with beats and vaguely meaningless words about nothing remotely important or particularly relatable if you’re over twelve years old or not afflicted with arrested development. There is a large audience that is disenfranchised but re-engageable.
So, now we’re building Socially Driven Music in large part in homage to John & Yoko’s message of peace and love, at a very troubled time, and invite you to join us:?https://bit.ly/SDMMailChimp. We’re about improving the livelihoods of music artists and songwriters in myriad innovative ways, while connecting them with social impact causes for reciprocal benefit.?We are cultivating socially poignant songs and artists with the goal of possibly creating perpetual copyrights that will animate listeners to calls-to-action, in the model of “Give Peace a Chance, “Crippled Inside,” “Imagine” and others (check out this Spotify playlist for more examples:?https://bit.ly/Socially_Driven_Music)
This is truly a labor of love (pun intended) that we hope speaks to and fills a large void in today’s music industry…in the spirit of The Beatles.
