Get in 2 Apprenticeships Event at Serlby Park Academy, Delta Academies Trust on 4th July

On 4th July, we had the privilege of participating in the "Get in 2 Apprenticeships" event at Serlby Park Academy Delta Academies Trust. This initiative, supported by D2N2 LEP and organised by The Early Talent Consultancy, aims to introduce students to the world of apprenticeships and their vast opportunities.

Wright Engineering was proud to be represented by:

  • Paul Gibson ?– MD of the Fabrications Department
  • James Maddock?– Apprentice Design Engineer
  • Harry Fitzhugh?– Apprentice Design Engineer
  • Sarah Collins?– Project Administrator and liaison for local schools and colleges, specialising in onboarding apprentices.

Other employers who supported this event were Fairfield Engineering Solutions and NG Bailey .


Event Highlights:

Introduction by Helen Eleftheriou :?Helen from The Early Talent Consultancy kicked off the event with an insightful presentation to the Year 9 students. She covered the diverse sectors offering apprenticeships, the application process, and the numerous benefits of pursuing this career path.

Meet the Employers:?Our apprentices, James Maddock and Harry Fitzhugh, engaged with students, sharing their experiences and aspirations. James, nearing the end of his Level 3 apprenticeship and aiming to pursue a Higher National Certificate, and Harry, just starting his Level 4 apprenticeship, provided honest and inspiring insights into the life of an apprentice.

James Maddock?has been with Wright Engineering for five years, working diligently with the Design Team. He is on the verge of completing his Level 3 apprenticeship and plans to progress onto the Higher National Certificate course. James's journey has been one of continuous learning and development, and he was eager to share his experiences with the students.

Harry Fitzhugh, a recent addition to our Design Team, has just embarked on his apprenticeship journey. Harry is a Level 4 Apprentice and will be studying the HNC in Engineering on a day-release basis starting in September. His fresh perspective and enthusiasm were invaluable in helping the students understand what to expect from an apprenticeship.

The students asked James and Harry a range of questions about what it’s like to be an apprentice, what to expect, balancing studying and learning on the job, and their aspirations within the company. Their honest and accurate answers provided the students with a real insight into the apprenticeship experience.

Skills Sessions:?Paul Gibson and Sarah Collins led a "Skills Session," where we presented an overview of Wright Engineering and the apprenticeships we offer. We discussed potential earnings, career progression, and additional courses available to apprentices.

Paul Gibson, who recruits 3-4 new Plater/Welder Apprentices every year, gave the students an insight into the practical aspects of the apprenticeships we offer. He highlighted the skills and knowledge apprentices gain and the opportunities for growth and development within the company.

Sarah Collins?focused on the onboarding process and how Wright supports apprentices from the moment they join the company. She emphasised the importance of a supportive environment in ensuring apprentices can thrive and succeed.

The session also featured the "Wright Engineering Bolt" challenge, where students worked in teams to solve a fun and challenging puzzle. The activity fostered teamwork and problem-solving skills, with prizes for the fastest groups, including enthusiastic participation from the teachers! The Year 9 students worked together to remove a nut from a bolt and remove the ring as well. This challenge required them to think creatively and collaboratively to find the solution, and all the groups successfully solved the puzzle.


Q&A Session:?To wrap up the day, a Q&A session allowed students to ask any lingering questions. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with the Early Talent Consultancy reporting:

  • A 259% increase in students' understanding of apprenticeships
  • A 63% increase in interest in applying for an apprenticeship

Student Feedback:?“The number of doors it opens for you because after the apprenticeship I think it leads to a good job.”?

“Learning about the positives of taking an apprenticeship instead of going straight to uni. It allowed us to learn more and gave me more choices.”?

“Interactions were more entertaining than just someone talking to you.”

This event was a fantastic opportunity to connect with the next generation and showcase the incredible opportunities available through apprenticeships at Wright Engineering.
