GE's Partnerships and Proof Points at COP27

Today marks 10 days until COP27 in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt. Dubbed the “implementation COP,” Egypt's ultimate goal is to showcase how countries are putting promises into action and delivering on the commitments made at COP26.
GE is closely aligned with Egypt's focus on action and delivering on commitments.??Our theme for COP27 is Proof Points.??We want to deliver proof points for action through demonstrating decarbonization technology, elevating the role of emerging economies in contributing to global climate change solutions, and leveraging diverse private-public partnerships for success.
On technology, my favorite proof point is the exciting effort between GE’s Gas Power team and the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and partners to run a GE LM6000 gas turbine at the Sharm el-Sheikh Power Plant on a hydrogen fuel blend. This will be a first for the African continent and enable Egypt to help serve as a proof point for hydrogen blending to reduce carbon emissions while providing reliable energy.??It’s inspiring to see how creatively our team is working through all the engineering and practical logistics.??Learn more:?https://www.dhirubhai.net/posts/josephanis_cairo-egypt-climatechange-activity-6943146414289866752-f2K7/
On elevating the role of emerging economies, with GE’s presence in 175 countries and equipment that helps generate one-third of the world’s electricity, we’re uniquely passionate that the energy transition must simultaneously decarbonize and lift up access to reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity.?

This is why we’re so invested in Egypt’s success for COP27 and more generally for its efforts to ensure a just and ambitious energy transition.??We are working with Egypt to realize both goals, while also ensuring they are invested in the breakthrough technologies of tomorrow.??Today, GE-built technologies can deliver up to 17 gigawatts of electricity to Egypt’s grid, and our Renewable Energy business provides technology, including substations, that support the country’s growing wind and solar generating capacity. For example, the Badr substation dispatches 1.5 GW of electricity and plays a strategic role in the Egypt - Saudi Arabia Interconnection, linking the national grids of both countries and helping to deliver electricity to over 1 million homes. On public-private partnerships, this may be the most rapidly growing of our proof points. To state it simply: nothing GE does at COP27 will be as GE for just for GE.??To the contrary, every moment of engagement we have planned is in coordination with a combination of government, NGO and corporate stakeholders.??This is perhaps what we’re most proud of—the honor and opportunity to work across entities and industries as a force multiplier for action and progress.??For example, our Digital team joined a coalition with the Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources to support the decarbonization of select downstream facilities in Egypt and help to make meaningful progress on the wider energy transition.??This will be a true lasting legacy of COP27—elevating the role of emerging economies like Egypt to contribute to solutions. Thank you for the opportunity to share this preview. We look forward to sharing updates on how these proof points and many other develop in Egypt in November.
