GE's 2021 Sustainability Efforts: Delivering Performance, Improving Programs, Enabling Success

Today, GE is proud to publish our 2021 Sustainability Report. This report details our efforts to solve three of the world’s most pressing sustainability challenges: the energy transition to drive decarbonization, precision health that personalizes diagnoses and treatments, and a future of smarter, more efficient flight. I hope you’ll take time to explore the report and read GE Chairman and CEO Larry Culp's note. https://www.dhirubhai.net/pulse/ges-2021-sustainability-report-larry-culp/

Throughout our 130-year history, GE has demonstrated a larger purpose of lifting up the quality of life for people around the globe. As the report shows, we work every day?with customers, partners, communities, and governments in over 175 countries to build a world that works.?

As we pursue these goals, we also work to improve our impacts to our people, communities, and planet.??In 2021, we focused on continuous improvement to drive three ESG priorities.

First, we prioritized progress toward the commitments and ambitions we announced in recent years. Regarding climate change, our businesses detail their efforts to make operational and other improvements on our path to carbon neutrality for our Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2030. We’re proud to report a 21 percent reduction in our emissions compared to our 2019 baseline.?

Also, for the first time, our Aviation and Power businesses share details regarding our efforts toward our Scope 3 ambition to be net zero for sold products by 2050.??Our businesses manufacture some of the world’s most important and complex technology, and we take seriously our role to innovate what the world will need to realize its decarbonization and sustainable development goals.??In the Report, we share our principles for approaching net zero and detail how each business has already paved a foundation, is delivering state of the art technology today, and is innovating the breakthrough technologies for tomorrow.??We also include a roadmap for each sector that represents our credible view as of today on the timing and impact of these technologies.??

Second, with a spirit of humility, we took a transparent look at where we could do better and took action to close program gaps. This included a broad internal and external stakeholder survey for GE Company and our businesses. With this feedback, we pursued efforts to articulate our policies more clearly on product safety and quality, to develop a holistic strategy around product stewardship and circular economy, and to provide more details surrounding our governance and compliance programs. For the first time, we detail our Paris Climate Agreement aligned policy engagement and lobbying. Also, we released our GE Human Rights Report today to provide greater transparency into how we run our human rights program, from our suite of governance documents to our due diligence program.

Third, following November’s announcement that we plan to create three independent companies, we are working across GE to ensure that these impactful companies will operate with sustainability at their core on day one.??We are fully seizing the opportunity in this ESG era to create new companies focused on critical global needs in energy, healthcare, and aviation, merging the legacy of GE’s technology and culture and the best-in-class expertise of modern sustainability programs.

It’s my honor to share GE’s sustainability progress with you that reflects the extraordinary effort of our 168,000 employees and our collaborations with our customers, investors, governments, and other stakeholders in 175 countries. And I’m energized for the work that lies ahead. We know the stakes are high, and we have never been more committed to working with our partners and stakeholders to build a world that works—for everyone.??

Highly informative report ??, GE in each of the 3 new businesses has got the right mix of technologies which impact the lives and well being of global citizens. This report has very well captured the different technologies in each business contributing to sustainability. Hope to see the impact to stakeholders quantified in next editions.
