Germany’s startup scene unites to raise funds for earthquake victims in Turkey and Syria

Fundraiser event to raise €10,000 to take place on March 12.

Berlin, Germany – February 28, 2023. Germany’s startup community is coming together to raise funds for the victims of the devastating earthquake that shook parts of Turkey and Syria in early February. The newly formed “Startups Unite” alliance is organizing a community fundraiser event in Berlin on March 12, featuring charity auctions, raffle draws, live music, and inspiring talks by members of the local startup community. The event's goal is to raise €10,000, which will be distributed equitably and transparently to aid organizations in Turkey and Syria through I.S.A.R. (International Search and Rescue), a globally operating NGO that coordinates rescue missions. The charity event that will start at 6 PM is open to all entrepreneurs and startup investors who share the community's commitment to positively impacting the world.

Joerg Rheinboldt , Managing Director at APX, said: “The startup scene in Berlin is a unique and vibrant community that values social responsibility and making a positive impact in the world. It's inspiring to see many startups, entrepreneurs, and investors unite to support those affected by the earthquake in Turkey and Syria. As a community with strong ties to the region, we must do our part to help those in need. I'm honored to be part of Startups Unite and will be involved in the fundraising event to contribute to this important cause.”

The natural disaster has caused immense damage to the region near Gaziantep, followed by numerous aftershocks since the first quake. Many families have lost their homes, loved ones, and livelihoods.

Rahel Demant the initiator of the initiative, said: “As a group of startups and venture capital investors, we believe that it is our duty as a community to support those affected by this tragedy and help them get back on their feet. The official death toll has reached 50,000, and 6 million people have become homeless overnight. Our target is to raise at least €10,000, and we are confident that with the support of our community, we can achieve this goal.”

All proceeds from the event will be processed by and donated to the earthquake victims through I.S.A.R., which is actively working on the ground in Turkey and coordinates rescue missions in Syria with the locally operating aid organization ‘White Helmets.’ Official tax deduction certifications will be given out to all donors.

Paul-Philipp Braun , Press Officer at I.S.A.R., said: “I'm grateful for the various communities that are coming together to help address the humanitarian crisis that has unfolded in Turkey and Syria since early February. United by its Turkish, Syrian, and German roots, the startup community has many ties to the affected region, so it is imposing to see the aid efforts it has kickstarted over the last few weeks. As a representative of I.S.A.R., I can guarantee that all funds raised at the event will be distributed equitably and transparently to rescue organizations in Turkey and Syria, where the crisis has hit the most vulnerable communities the hardest. The targeted amount of donations could already provide critical resources such as 150 four-person tents, equipment for two child care centers, 200 camp beds, or 3,000 meals, for now, the homeless population in the region.”

The fundraising dinner will feature various activities, including a charity auction, raffle draws, live music, and inspiring talks by startup community members to inform about the ongoing rescue and aid efforts. The organizers aim to create plenty of networking opportunities for all attending entrepreneurs and investors who share the commitment to positively impacting the world to create awareness for aid possibilities and future crisis situations and natural disasters.
