The weather in Hamburg is notoriously changeable. Ignoring the cold and rainy climes last week were over 1000 visitors flocking to the the 73rd German Aerospace Congress. For the 5th time, Hamburg hosted the largest congress for researchers in the aerospace industry in Germany. The conference featured 420 presentations in 13 parallel (!) content strands, covering a wealth of topics including new propulsion technologies, sustainability, cabins and much more. Hamburg's government, represented by Senator for Economy and Innovation Melanie Leonhard, hosted a Senate Reception, offering a great opportunity for the 490 guests to network, exchange ideas and admire the period state rooms in Hamburg's city hall. In her speech, Ms Leonhard emphasised the immense importance of applied science for our aviation cluster and thanked the researchers for their wealth of ideas and willingness to tackle the big challenges of the day. We wholeheartedly agree.
Meawhile, Hamburg Airport 's ambitious plans to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions to zero by 2035 got a further boost this week. As regular readers of this newsletter will know, the Net Zero 2035 project is budgeted at €250m, including €70m to build a wind park to deliver clean electricity to the airport city. A new company, Sustainable Energy Solutions, was founded to manage the the site. Combined with the airport's recent announcement that it will join the municipal heating grid, the planned wind park marks a further step toward a zero-emission airport by 2035. Best wishes to the new company's directors, David Lieber and Johannes Scharnberg!
And there's more: Hamburg hosted the first edition of a new UN-sponsored international sustainability conference. Aviation played a strong role at the Hamburg Sustainability Conference , with a "Hamburg Sustainable Aviation Declaration" signed by leading companies from the region pledging to cooperate on sustainability goals in our industry. It's a further signal showing that the businesses and researchers in commercial aviation are serious about honouring their commitments to tackle the emissions issue. At Hamburg Aviation we're actively supporting our members in their decarbonisation efforts and look forward to presenting a new initiative in the coming months. Watch this space!
Best wishes,
Nikolina Mendes, Angus Baigent and the Hamburg Aviation Team
Hamburg City Hall hosts Senate Reception for German Aerospace Congress
What a night! Germany's aerospace research community came together at the invitation of the Hamburg Senate, represented by Senator Melanie Leonhard of Hamburg's Ministry for Economy and Innovation. The event was a highlight of the German Aerospace Congress, which spanned three exciting days on the campus of the University of Hamburg. The 490 guests represented universities, research institutions and companies from all over Germany. After speeches in the main Festsaal Hall by our Managing Director Ralf Gust , Senator Leonhard and Roland Gerhards , President of the German Aerospace Society (DGLR), the guests enjoyed the impressive backdrop of the town hall while networking. Many thanks to all involved in organising this wonderful evening!

DM-AirTech: making aviation more profitable with weather prediction
We recently had the pleasure of visiting our Windrove and Hamburg Aviation member DM-AirTech. The dynamic and young start-up has a big vision: Urban Air Mobility safer and more profitable! Eine DM-AirTech's main challenge: the weather. 30% of current commercial flights worldwide are affected by adverse weather conditions with a substantial loss of profit for operators (estimated at $2BN). Scalable operations in the UAM sector will only be economically viable if accurate and reliable hashtag#weather analyses are integrated into operations. Find out more here.
