In a week from now, Germany will elect a new government. Chances are - unfortunately, IMHO - it will move (much) further to the right. I hope this article from the Future Today Institute https://futuretodayinstitute.com/countryscenarios-germany/ will help in reconsidering the options. And I want to plea for a higher inclusion of 50% of our population: women! Here a very short summary:
Germany is at a pivotal moment where its choices today will define its future economic and geopolitical standing. The Future Today Institute's report presents two contrasting 2035 scenarios:
1. Scenario 1: "Embracing Opportunity"
If Germany proactively invests in AI, digitalization, Industry 5.0, and sustainability, it can remain a global leader. Government and business leaders must streamline bureaucracy, enhance education, attract global talent, and integrate AI across industries. The "Mittelstand" and innovation hubs can drive cutting-edge advancements in renewable energy, materials science, and automation, positioning Germany as a tech and sustainability powerhouse. Strong public-private collaborations and strategic financial incentives will ensure continued economic growth, workforce empowerment, and social cohesion.
In my opinion, a critical aspect of this transformation is the full inclusion of women in the workforce, leadership, and innovation ecosystems. Women can and should play a vital role in driving economic success, particularly in STEM fields, entrepreneurship, and policymaking. The expansion of childcare through public-private partnerships and a cultural shift towards equity in leadership roles will allow women to contribute at all levels. The PULSE Women Economic Network is already fostering change by pushing for a national vision that ensures women are at the forefront of innovation and decision-making.
2. Scenario 2: "Attempted Protection of the Status Quo"
A failure to embrace change will lead to economic stagnation, brain drain, shrinking exports, and industrial decline. Without structural support for women in leadership, business, and technology, Germany will miss out on a key talent pool necessary for innovation. A lack of inclusive policies will further deepen workforce shortages and reduce global competitiveness.
The Call to Action
Women must be central to Germany’s economic transformation, ensuring innovation is diverse, inclusive, and sustainable. Their leadership will be indispensable in shaping Germany’s future.
