Germany issued 80,000 visas for employment purposes between January and June 2024, as the Federal Foreign Office told the German Press Agency.

Of those, 40,000 were issued to skilled workers, which is 3,000 more compared to the same period of 2023, Schengen reports.

GERMANY SAW NEARLY 600,000 JOB VACANCIES IN 2023

An analysis by the German Economic Institute (IW) also confirmed that Germany is facing a workforce shortage. The study noted that 570,000 jobs remained unfilled in Germany in 2023, and the shortage is consequently affecting the country’s economy.

The number of labour shortages is expected to increase further in the coming years, as per a study by the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). Referring to this study, German Labour Minister Hubertus Heil said in an earlier statement that the country will need seven million employees by 2035.

GERMANY EASES IMMIGRATION RULES TO ATTRACT FOREIGN WORKERS

Germany has recently revealed its plans to hire Indian skilled workers?in a bid to ease labour shortages. Regarding this initiative, authorities will introduce the Indian Skilled Worker strategy to German-Indian government consultations this autumn.

In addition to the move mentioned above,?Germany has eased some of its immigration rules to tackle the labour shortages.

Moreover, in June 2024, Germany twofold the number of annual work visas granted under the Western Balkans Regulation to 50,000. Due to this increase, citizens of Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Kosovo, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Serbia now have more opportunities to join the German labour market.

During the same month,?authorities introduced the Opportunity Card to make it easier for non-EU citizens to enter Germany?for the purpose of looking for a suitable job.
