German labor unions stage strike at Deutsche well
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia-German labor and journalist unions initiated a strike today and will continue tomorrow in response to stalled wage negotiations with Deutsche Welle management. The unions are advocating for a?10.5% wage increase?for all employees, citing the need to combat rising living costs due to inflation. In comparison, management has only proposed a?minimum 2.4% increase?over the next two years, DW reported.
After six rounds of discussions, unions expressed frustration at management's lack of meaningful responses regarding their wage demands. They believe that the strike is essential to highlight their concerns and push for better compensation.
Despite emphasizing the importance of continuous news coverage, the unions have decided to proceed with the strike. Deutsche Welle has requested that journalists and studio technicians inform them about their participation in the strike, allowing for alternative broadcast strategies.
The unions have committed to providing one day’s wages to members participating in the strike to encourage participation. The protest is taking place outside the Deutsche Welle radio building along the Rhine River in Bonn.
The right to strike is protected under German law, underscoring the unions' legal backing in their efforts for better wage negotiations.
