German Corona Tracing App will be Open Source!

The #Corona App promises more normality for society – and more security for citizens. #Telekom and #SAP have been working on the development of the app for over ten days. The app is due to be released in a few weeks by the Robert Koch Institute.

I am really excited about this project. SAP and Deutsche Telekom are doing everything we can to complete this app as quickly as possible. Fast, secure in accordance with #gdprcompliance (DSGVO) and fully transparent through #opensource: this is what we’re striving for. The user is always in control. It’s important that everyone knows: The app traces the #coronavirus, it doesn't track the movement of individuals. This is an essential condition for broad acceptance of the app and its effectiveness as a tool to break the chain of infection efficiently and fight the coronavirus.

Next week, we will be releasing the first information about our work on the development platform @GitHub #GitHub. We have consciously chosen an open source approach because it creates trust. We need broad acceptance of the app among citizens, right from the start.

Partnerships crucial for success

Within a very short period of time, we have integrated a world class project team and numerous partners, such as RKI, BMG and the security experts from BSI and BfDI. The cooperation with #Apple and #Google is important as well, since 99% of all smartphone users use either Android or iOS operating systems.

The team has been working hard to lay the foundation for the project’s success. The software architecture is in place. The technical planning of the verification process has been completed.

We are looking at interoperability between different country apps to ensure that the German solution is connected to the apps of the neighboring countries.

It is clear to everyone involved that we will have to live with this technology for quite some time. The Corona tracing app brings society back – stronger and closer together. But to be clear: this app is not a panacea. It can help society and the economy contain the virus and make life more social again. But only if lots of people take part. That's why we're doing everything we can during the development phase to ensure that there are no reservations about this technology and that it is used by millions of users. We will keep you informed on our progress over the coming weeks!

The app will be open source and transparency is a major success factor for the app. Making details about the app public has already started. The scoping document is available on GitHub: https://github.com/corona-warn-app/cwa-documentation/blob/master/translations/scoping_document.de.md ... and discussions have already started.

Let’s drop any Brexit barriers and be stronger than the sum of the parts on this one. The UK is prepared to evolve and better innovation based incremental improvements. #makingtheworldrunbetterandimprovingpeopleslives.

Thanks Adel. Just let's do it. It's time to act instead of talking. Transparency and trust is important, I fully support this approach. Keep going...
