Geotechnical Engineering at Transport for NSW

Transport for NSW employs a range of engineering Subject Matter Experts across numerous disciplines. One such specialisation is Transport’s Pavement and Geotechnical Engineering team who currently have an exciting opportunity for a Geotechnical Engineer. I sat down with Technical Lead, Jing Yang to learn a little more about her fascinating story.

The importance of Geotechnical Engineering cannot be underestimated in large scale infrastructure builds, what drew you to this specialisation?

Geotechnical engineering is sometimes called foundation engineering, it is the basis for almost all kinds of construction. I like how the specialisation is about the interaction between man-made materials and the natural setting, soils, rocks and water. I enjoy the challenges of finding and adapting solutions depending on the ground conditions I’m dealing with, every geotechnical problem/issue is unique in its own way.

What do you enjoy most about your role as a Geotechnical Engineer at Transport for NSW?

Meeting and working with skilled and experienced people from different disciplines and backgrounds in the organisation. Able to work on a wide spectrum of projects, that makes a difference in people’s daily life.   

What encouragement or advice would you give engineers starting out today?

Willing to learn and try. Be responsible for what you do and think about the impact.
