Geospatial Technology in India: Trends and Prospects

Geospatial market is transforming from the distinct software or hardware based market into a supporting technology that meets industry-specific business process needs. Geospatial technologies provide benefits in planning, research and development in business processes that make them imperative. Geospatial solutions are applied across a large spectrum of industries and applications that benefit from the features/functions of a comprehensive portfolio of all forms of geographically referenced information. They are changing the way business decisions are taken and implemented.

Geospatial Media and Communications recently conducted a user survey to gain a new perspective on the market behaviour and trends in Geospatial adoption in India. A detailed interaction brought one-to-one interactions and web based survey has been conducted with almost 550 organizations across the country to analyze the present level of awareness, applications, benefits and challenges.

The sectoral analysis of - infrastructure, urban development, agriculture, electricity, disaster management, water, environment, forestry and climate change – present level of awareness, applications, benefits and challenges, adoption, usage have been elaborated in the report.

Key Findings

  • Geospatial Technologies are taking long strides in various sectors in India. Though they are not really in a very advanced stage in most of the sectors, their applications have definitely found new avenues of implementation during the current decade.
  • More than 90% of the respondents in the agriculture sector say they are using satellite imageries for various applications; another 75% are using GIS.
  • As regards the question of purposes for which the geospatial technologies are being used across sectors, data acquisition and visualisation is by far the most important. Asset management, planning, monitoring and assessment are the next four important reasons for use of geospatial technologies. In the current context, analytics, operations, resource management etc. are yet to take off.
  • Need for improved planning, better decision making and expecting to get a better cost efficiency are the major reason for adoption.
  • Technologies have aided in a faster decision making process and also helped them create an improved monitoring process. The other major benefits derived are enhanced safety, security & control and in optimum allocation of resources.
