Georgia’s Fight for Democracy: A Call for Action

Georgia’s Fight for Democracy: A Call for Action

We are witnessing an unprecedented struggle for Georgia’s democratic future. The ruling Georgian Dream (GD) party, widely criticized for its pro-Russian stance, has plunged the country into political turmoil. Allegations of election fraud, including vote-buying and ballot-stuffing, have cast a shadow over the legitimacy of the October parliamentary elections, leaving many of us feeling betrayed.

In the aftermath of these disputed elections, we have taken to the streets in Tbilisi and across the country. Our voices are united in demanding new elections under international supervision and a renewed commitment to our European aspirations. Yet, instead of dialogue, the authorities have responded with tear gas, water cannons, and rubber bullets. Journalists, protesters, and even bystanders have been injured, with over 100 of us arrested for standing up for our rights.

The current government’s heavy-handed tactics are not just an attack on us—they are an assault on the very principles of democracy and freedom. This is not the Georgia we envision, and it is not the future we will accept. Those who support the GD regime have aligned themselves with a party that undermines our sovereignty, our dignity, and our aspirations for a better tomorrow.

We are not alone in this fight, but we expect more than we have seen so far. While international voices, including the European Parliament and the United States, have raised concerns over the legitimacy of the elections and the alarming actions of the government, their actions have fallen short of what this critical moment demands. The suspension of Georgia’s EU accession talks until 2028 has only intensified our outrage, and we call for stronger, more decisive support and solidarity with our movement.

As we face tear gas and batons, we remain resolute. This is about more than an election—it is about reclaiming Georgia’s soul. We will not stand by while a regime steers our nation toward authoritarianism. The road ahead may be long, but we are determined to ensure that Georgia’s future is one of democracy, freedom, and European integration.

To the international community: your support is vital. Stand with us as we fight for a democratic Georgia. Together, we can ensure that our voices are heard, and our aspirations are realized.
