Ravin Jesuthasan, CFA, FRSA from WEF Davos 2025

Dear Friends

As I leave Davos after what has been one of the more memorable Annual Meetings of the World Economic Forum, I am torn between competing emotions. On the one hand, there was much concern about the geopolitical implications of recent and upcoming elections and the potential consequences of tariffs and policy changes associated with climate, DEI and immigration. Interestingly, while acknowledging these near term uncertainties, most CEOs I spoke with were optimistic in their outlook over the intermediate term. The sense was that while there are areas of specific concern and pockets of weakness, the global economy and collaboration between governments and the private sector is relatively strong and resilient and should be able to withstand the anticipated near term shocks. I hope they are right.

On a more positive note, I was really thrilled by the growing recognition that we need to be intentional in the redesign of work to address the opportunities presented by AI. For the last 2 years, much of the discussion at the WEF has been about the latest advances in AI and the exploration of use cases. Unsurprisingly, none of this delivered on the long forecasted productivity gains. Why? The answer is something I have written about in each of my 6 books; you need to start work backwards and not tech forwards! We have consistently seen this approach being taken by the organizations who generate real ROI from AI. They see how they can redesign the work in a specific domain to make the most of the technology's capabilities. This also enables them to see emerging skill gaps and focus their upskilling and reskilling efforts, another area of much discussion at the WEF. While we should train everyone to use AI and give them access to the latest tools, such democratized access and skill building is only useful in raising awareness and understanding but will NOT generate a meaningful return in a timely fashion. This is only possible through the intentional redesign of work; deconstructing jobs, identifying where specific activities can be substituted or augmented by AI and reconstructing new ways of working. This will help you understand where AI is rendering certain skills obsolete by substituting the work and where the redesign of work is demanding new skills.?

The recognition that the ecosystem of work needs to be changed is a breakthrough for many leaders and I believe it will let us finally unlock the promise of AI that the technologists have been waxing lyrical about for so long.

Do Culture Memos matter?

Over the past five years, I have been studying the way organizational leadership has experienced significant shifts, influenced by the post-Covid era and the emerging AI landscape. As part of my research I have built a new world people leadership framework which helps leaders build their skills to engage and manage the modern-day workforce. This leadership model has purpose as one of the key dimensions. In this article we examine the latest culture memo from Netflix on how leaders drive purpose in an organization and its impact. Netflix’s cultural journey offers great insights in laying out the journey for high performance teams and collaborative excellence. | Rajan Kalia

In 2025, Remember: There Is No Finish Line in Technology

I spent most the the holiday break working on the outline for my forthcoming book, "The Spatial Race." January 1 was my first official writing day, and in only a short period of time, I've managed to cover a decent amount of ground and circle back around to a profound idea -- in tech, as in running, there really is no finish line. | Cortney Harding

As much as we see the discussions around generative AI, the bigger question continues to be, ‘Is your company built to win in any economic environment’?? | By Hari Abburi

3 key questions to kickstart your AI transformation

As we enter year three of the generative AI era, leaders and laggards are starting to emerge – and pressure is growing for C-suite executives to show stakeholders they are making progress with this promising technology.

?The good news for companies that are falling behind is that there is still time to catch up. Everyone acknowledges AI’s potential. Fully 96% of the CEOs of New York Stock Exchange-listed companies recently surveyed said they view AI as an opportunity for their business, according to research by the Oliver Wyman Forum and the NYSE. | By Ravin Jesuthasan, CFA, FRSA

My annual post-Davos reflections during the WEF

From my diary on Sunday morning after visiting the Taschen concept store in Milan and heading to Davos a few days later for events during the 2025 annual World Economic Forum!

This year’s WEF Annual Meeting theme was ‘Collaboration for the Intelligent Age’.

Just as the WEF started, animal spirits went ballistic as if teasing everyone about AGI and our intelligence. As a result, the $TRUMP and the $MELANINA memecoins were inevitably discussed on every Web3, crypto panel. | By Efi Pylarinou

Sandwich Economics - The BigTech you never knew

Back in 2020, Silicon Valley's tech giants made a combined investment of more than 10 billion dollars in a seemingly traditional telecom company in India - Reliance Jio. An asset-intensive industry where incumbents struggle to hold onto profits, so very unlike the big techs that thrive on a scalable asset-light business model.

?Why then were they still investing in this traditional telecom business? | By Sangeet Paul Choudary
