Geopolitical tensions in Europe and West Asia have spotlighted the necessity for robust energy security strategies. For India, this has meant re-evaluating its approach to energy production, focusing on both indigenous resources like coal and expanding renewable energy capabilities. Recent global events have exposed vulnerabilities in energy supply chains, particularly with the heavy reliance on imports for renewable technologies, mainly from China. This dependency underscores the importance of balancing energy security with environmental sustainability.

India has set ambitious targets to address these challenges. The country plans to add 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030, including significant expansions in solar and wind energy. At the same time, to ensure energy security amidst global uncertainties, India is also increasing its coal-based thermal power capacity by 55 GW by 2030-31. This dual approach is designed to mitigate the risks associated with global supply chain disruptions and geopolitical conflicts.

The Indian government is not only focusing on expanding energy capacity but is also investing in advanced technologies to enhance the efficiency and environmental performance of thermal power plants. Technologies such as carbon capture and Advanced Ultra Super Critical (AUSC) technology are being adopted to improve the efficiency of coal-fired plants, potentially increasing their operational efficiency to 46%. This approach aims to ensure that coal remains a viable part of the energy mix while reducing its environmental impact.

Impact on the Piping Industry

The emphasis on both renewable and thermal energy projects creates significant opportunities for the domestic piping industry. Notably, Coal India Ltd. (CIL) has announced a USD 5 billion investment in new coal-fired power plants located near its mines. This investment will drive demand for high-quality process piping solutions essential for the construction and operation of these plants.

The Indian process piping market, which had an annual turnover of USD 30.6 billion in FY 2023, is projected to grow to USD 46.3 billion by FY 2030. This growth is attributed to the country’s expanding energy infrastructure and manufacturing sectors. The government’s initiatives, including the ‘Make in India’ campaign, further boost the demand for domestic piping solutions, reinforcing India’s position as a key player in the Asia Pacific process piping market.
