Geographic Digital Twins

A geographic digital twin is a dynamic virtual representation of real-world environments, integrating 3D models with geospatial data. This technology supports not only cities but also regions, countries, AECO companies (Architecture, Engineering, Construction and Operations), and large corporations with extensive infrastructure, enabling the simulation, monitoring, and management of processes in real time. It enhances planning, infrastructure management, and decision-making, fostering efficiency, transparency, and engagement.

Camptocamp’s Partnership with Virtual City Systems

Through our partnership with Virtual City Systems, Camptocamp combines its expertise in Open Source geospatial solutions with their innovative tools for managing and distributing 3D models. As both an integration and contributing partner, Camptocamp distributes and integrates a comprehensive solution for building a geographic digital twin. This software suite empowers cities, regions, and corporations to build, analyze, and maintain digital twins, improving infrastructure management and regional planning. Camptocamp also contributes to the ongoing development of these Open Source tools for diverse use cases.

Key Components of the VC Suite

  1. VC Database is a robust administration system for CityGML and other geospatial data, designed for efficient management and querying of 3D models. It provides secure importing, exporting, and updating of CityGML data for consistent storage of semantic models. VC Database integrates with tools like VC Publisher and VC WFS, supporting seamless querying and transformation of large datasets across regions, countries, and large corporations.
  2. VC Publisher simplifies the creation and distribution of 3D models by processing various geospatial data formats, including terrain models and orthophotos, and publishing interactive maps on the web or intranet. It ensures real-time updates across connected applications through its integration with VC Database, VC Warehouse, and VC Map. This solution is highly beneficial for large infrastructure corporations, regions, and surveying offices that manage extensive geospatial data.
  3. VC Map is an Open Source platform for visualizing, analyzing, and simulating 3D models on the web. This tool allows users to combine 2D, 3D, and aerial imagery, enabling spatial analyses like visibility studies and height profiling. As an Open Source platform, VC Map provides a flexible framework for developing innovative use cases, empowering regions, corporations, and public institutions to adapt it to their specific needs for infrastructure management and planning. Camptocamp actively uses VC Map to support various projects across these sectors.
  4. VC Planner integrates directly with VC Map to offer advanced urban and infrastructure planning capabilities. It supports the drafting and simulation of architectural models within 3D environments, enabling detailed visualization of future projects. This tool is crucial for planning large-scale developments in cities, regions, and corporate infrastructures, allowing decision-makers to simulate and visualize their impact before implementation.

Comprehensive Management for Regions, Corporations, and Public Institutions

Camptocamp’s Geographic Digital Twin solution, in collaboration with Virtual City Systems, provides a complete framework for managing large-scale environments, from cities and regions to national infrastructure. With the Open Source foundation of VC Map and tools like VC Database for data management and VC Publisher for seamless map distribution, this solution enables the creation of innovative, data-driven use cases tailored to specific infrastructure challenges.

Camptocamp can assist in deploying these tools within your IT environment, integrating your geospatial data, and developing custom use cases that align with your unique requirements. Additionally, we can support your development team in addressing their 3D? development challenges to facilitate collaboration and enhancement of the solution. This ensures that the VC Suite meets the evolving needs of your infrastructure, planning, and management processes.

Solar cadaster

https://solaire.rennesmetropole.fr/

In the Rennes Métropole solar potential project, the digital twin technology was used to simulate and analyze the solar energy potential of buildings within the city. By creating a 3D model of the urban environment, stakeholders could assess rooftops' suitability for solar panel installation, optimize energy generation, and support the city's renewable energy goals. This tool helped decision-makers visualize the impact of solar energy projects, allowing for more informed planning and promoting sustainable development in the region.

Electromagnetic wave cadaster

https://ondes.rennesmetropole.fr/

In the Rennes Métropole project, digital twin technology was used to enhance citizen engagement and transparency by simulating and documenting electromagnetic waves. This tool visualized both simulated and measured wave propagation across urban areas and cataloged the sources of electromagnetic emissions. The digital twin allowed residents to access clear, transparent information about wave sources and their potential impacts, fostering informed public discussions and increasing trust in the deployment of infrastructure related to telecommunications and other wave-emitting equipment.

Public transportation planification

In the Rennes Métropole TRAMBUS project, the digital twin was used to simulate the future integration of the electric trambus network into the urban landscape. By creating a virtual replica of the city's infrastructure, this tool helped planners and decision-makers visualize the impact of the new T1 and T2 lines, optimize routes, and anticipate potential issues. The digital twin facilitated collaboration among stakeholders, providing a clearer understanding of how the transport system would interact with the city's environment and improve mobility for residents.
