My New Year discourse will invoke counterfactual statements of impossibilities that work as constraints when leading a company.
The starting point from my experience is that the universal law of constraint exists, no matter what or who you lead, be it situations, people, teams, or an enterprise. Any innovation, progress, or surprising creativity is manifested through a counterfactual constraint that acts as a burning-spot for all kinds of groundbreaking changes.
This is a universal law in physics, which takes counterfactual statements of what is possible and impossible. For example, “It is impossible to exceed the speed of light.” This statement invokes the impossible and contains so much energy and thinking power that scientists spend years breaking that “law” to develop a solution, and they succeed. Put constraints on light, limiting the speed of light, and suddenly, space starts shrinking, and time slows down, and the opposite.
This is also true for any living creature proven right by Charles Darvin’s “law” about the fact that only the fittest will survive, not the strongest or the biggest, nor the cleverest, but the one who fits the changes life offers to all of us, as time passes by.
It is a commonplace to invoke counterfactual beliefs and attitudes as impossibilities in business. My observation is that leaders in common cannot express or accept opinions that differ from the prejudices of their social business environment. They are few who can form such opinions. In my opinion, that is the fundamental reason why diversity in skills and background in teamwork is necessary.
Therefore, based on my insight gained from hundreds of companies and 20.000 attendances in my training programs, I set out the essence of overcoming mammoth business challenges.
A counterfactual example could be consciously putting constraints on the organization by demanding the double outcome in five years. Speed up yourself and observe that the organization precisely delivers that!
Another could be, let us position our company, so you have no competition.” Impossible? You decide. And one more, “Let us simultaneously build genuine teams, with an elite practice of teamwork, evolve ordinary leaders into genuine leaders, and replace the old hierarchy with a sustainable organic eco-network lasting in all perpetuity.” Impossible? You decide.
The latter will demand an upgrade of all humans on three ascending levels of competencies and strengths: insight, knowledge, professional skills, and experience on the individual, team, and organizational levels. Impossible??You decide.
To be specific. The individual-level demands striving to pursue and fulfill personal dreams and liberty, balancing wellbeing, and professional skills with outstanding achievements. Be realistic! Please, this is impossible! You decide.
