Genset 101: What are Stand By Power, Prime Power and Continuous Power?

In generators, Standby Power refers to the maximum power available for a limited period during emergencies, like power outages. It’s used only when the main power source fails. It can not overload.

Prime Power refers for generators that serve as the backup power source with in unlimited time, providing variable power levels for an extended period. Prime Power allows for a 10% overload capacity for a limited time.

Continuous Power is designed for generators running at a constant load indefinitely, with no overload capability. Generally applicable to situations where the generator is the main power. Unlike Prime Power, Continuous Power is ideal for operations requiring a stable, non-fluctuating power supply, such as remote or off-grid locations.

Thanks for the article Ahmet. I would like to add that ISO8528:2018 had introduced a Data Center Continuous power rating specifically for data center application which could be included here.
