Genome Annotation:

  1. Genome contains all biological information required to build and maintain living organism.
  2. Structural genomics: genetic and physical mapping of genomes
  3. Functional genomics: Analysis of gene function
  4. Comparative genomics: Comparison of genomes across species
  5. First genome annotation software system: Dr. Owen White
  6. Genome annotation is a process of identifying locations of genes and coding regions in a genome to determine their functions.
  7. Finding and attaching structural elements and its related function to each genome locations.

Structural Annotation:

  1. Identification of genomic elements
  2. Open reading frame and their localization
  3. Gene structure
  4. Coding regions
  5. Location of regulatory motifs

Functional Annotation:

  1. Attaching biological information to genomic elements
  2. Biochemical function – involved regulation
  3. Biological function
